Base number according to ASTM D2896-11

Oils and lubricants have large reserve designed to 7.Remove pH electrode from sample.
neutralize the acid produced after the combustion 8.Clean the electrode first in solvent mixture then in
process in order to avoid corrosion of engine distilled water.
components.iThis is a method for the determination of
the basic components of petroleum products. The
titration is run in non-aqueous media.TBN is expressed
as mg of KOH per gm of sample.

Electrode:

• HI 1049B Cobination electrode

• HI 7662-Ttemperature probe

Chemicals:

1.Chlorobenzene
2.Glacial Acetic Acid

Preparation of Solvent Mixture:

Solvent mixture:Add one volume of glacial acetic acid

to two volumes of Chlorobenzene..

Titrant: 0.1N HClO4(Perchloric Acid).Purchase

from Market

Procedure:

Calibration of pH Electrode :
Calibrate pH electrode HI1049B in pH4, pH7 & pH10
Successively.

Blank Titration:

1.Prime the burette with 0.1N HClO4 with min.3 rinses

2.Take 60mL of Solvent mixture in 100mL beaker
3.Create method for TBN number.
4.Place the the beaker under stirrer assembly and start
the titration.
5.When the titration ends record the value of titrant
dispensed in L(Litre)
6.Add the Blank L value in blank Value in method
options of TBN Number.

Sample Analysis:

1.Take oil Sample weight in 100mL beaker as given in

formula (10/ Base number in mg/gm) .
2.Add 60mL Solvent mixture in 100mL oil sample
beaker .
3.Place the Beaker Assembly under stirrer assembly.
4.Start the titration
5.Once the titration completed Direct reading of Base
Number mg/g KOH
6..Record the reading.
