1. Reflect on some of the well-known and successful leaders you know from history, perhaps
Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King or Florence Nightingale.

Questions
1.1 What characteristics do they share that makes them great leaders?

 Winston Churchill power to inspire, his strategic foresight, his driving


passion, and his unstoppable personality were the core qualities that
made him an effective leader and statesman, the realization that he too was a
“worm” tempered his character and kept him focused.
 Nelson Mandela He was a man of quiet dignity to match his towering achievements;
a man with an ever radiant smile and immense and humble sense of humour.
Mandela was a rare visionary who would see beyond the current struggles and pain.
He was convinced that one day the best parts of humanity would prevail over the
worst parts. He even inspired his enemies to be better than they had been
through forgiveness and reconciliation. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission he
established is a great model for achieving justice in all nations where human rights
abuses occurred and pain needs to be healed.
 Martin Luther King  was a successful leader of the African American civil rights
movement in the United States. He was intelligent in the fact that he was able to
lead African Americans in a nonviolent way to the advancement of civil rights. He
was powerful and he used his power to influence the believers
 Florence Nightingale She developed the first modern hospital nursing, pharmacy,
laundry, and nutrition services. Her meticulous recordkeeping was the forerunner
of today’s medical records and epidemiology functions. She established the
principle that triage should be based on medical need and not status, rank or
religion. And while she was obviously a compassionate caregiver, she was also a
tough-minded manager who calculated and then reduced cost per patient day. 

1.2 Why are they thought of as great individuals as well as successful leaders?

They are great individuals because of the things they did to their people, they have a lot of
achievements and sacrifices to help people improve the quality of life, rights and especially
the quality of health care in the whole world. They have a great contributions to the world.
1.3 Next think about some of the other successful leaders from history, like Adolf Hitler,
Napoleon Bonaparte, Joseph Stalin or Saddam Hussein.

 Adolf Hitler He was a leader with visions; he was a strategist; he was


a good orator; he had the interest of both his country and the citizens at hand;
he was so convincing.
 Napoleon Bonaparte successfully waged war against various coalitions of
European nations and expanded his empire.
 Joseph Stalin Stalin’s name meant "man of steel" and he lived up to it. He
oversaw the war machine that helped defeat Nazism and was the supreme ruler
of the Soviet Union for a quarter of a century.

1.4 What characteristics made them successful leaders? Why are they thought of as immoral
leaders? Expound your answer.

They are a successful leaders because they use their own power to fight for their right and
country, they use a war to expand their empires.

2. Case study: The new nursing sister Eileen is a newly appointed sister on the dialysis unit of a
busy general hospital. Eileen is liked by all of the staff, but has rapidly built up a reputation for
being quite disorganised. When she is in charge of the shift, things go wrong. She gets
sidetracked by small details and disappears for long periods of time to sort out seemingly minor
issues.

2.1. As an immediate nurse supervisor, how are you going to address this kind of employee?
Expound each solution you indicate.

I am going to call her attention to my office and talk to her what is really a problem in organizing
things. Is there anything that can help her to improve her duties to the workplace or a unit
where she is assigned.

3. Karen is a healthcare assistant who has worked in the dialysis unit for many years. Karen is
familiar with the routine and is able to cope with most situations that arise. Karen often takes
charge of the unit, even when Eileen is there. She coordinates the workload, makes telephone
calls and arranges transport. Karen uses her connections and the relationships she has built up
over the years to get things done.

Questions:
3.1 What are the things that need to be considered in maintaining sustainability and operation
in a certain area in absence of Karen in some instance?
It is important that the staff their will undergo a training how to manage the area or that unit
even though karen are not there. They also need to practice their work and things to do in the
specific area. They have to do telephone calls and arranges transport.

3.2 What are the needed action to prevent shortage of staff, how to disseminate workload,
trainings and competences? Expound your answer.
Scheduling is very important to prevent shortage of staff during the shift. They have their assign
work to do, such as in charge nurse and assign to give medicines to the patient.

3.3 Take some time to think about the implications of this case study. What might this mean for
the quality of nursing practice in the dialysis unit?

This mean that nursing practice is not a onetime training, it is a everyday challenge and
experienced in the area where you are assigned. It will help in the near future if you are
going to be assigned in different areas. You can easily adjust and adopt because you already
practicing organizing work in your past area, and disseminating the task to the other staff.

3.4 What implications might this have for Eileen and for Karen in the long term?

This will make their work experienced improved. They can easily get along and adjust to
other hospital if they will going to apply to other. It will make it their advantage because
they are trained already how to manage things in the specific unit.

3.5 How are the other staffs likely to feel about this situation?

The staff will feel upset to the nurse in charge to that unit because of the disorganized charge
nurse, it will make their work slow. They might be a problem in a long run. But if the in charge
nurse learn her lessons about how to manage things, designate workload to the other staff it
will make their work fast and smooth.
