ACTIVITY 5

1. Did Rizal retract or not? Explain your answer briefly.

Some historians state that Rizal has retracted. For

me, there's a chance that he may have retracted, but we

don't know if this was a voluntary retraction, or if he was

compelled to do so because of threats and fear. However,

we cannot deny that there is no proof or argument to claim

that he retracted, even though there were several

opinions and pieces of evidences provided by various

historians, these cannot prove that Rizal agreed to sign the retraction. Moreover, there

is no such original copy of the retraction, the only copies of which imitate the handwriting

of Rizal, which does not serve as concrete evidence of his retraction.

2. Does Rizal deserve the highest spot among our heroes? Discuss briefly.

It's always been a heated debate that Rizal doesn't deserve the highest position

among our heroes, he doesn't deserve to be named the "National Hero" because many

will argue that Andres Bonifacio is more deserving than him. But for me, Rizal deserves

the recognition he has got from the Filipinos. In a quiet yet powerful way, he fought for

the freedom of the Philippines. He was the one who proved that the pen is mightier than

the sword, as he used his novels to show his love for the country rather than the use of

force or violence. In fact, Bonifacio even credited Rizal and even named him Katipunan's

honorary leader.
