Renz Quiped BTVTED-II Reading in Philippine History Lesson 9

Learning Activity:

Answer the given questions below:

1. Do you think that Rizal would retract his statements?

- No, Rizal did not retract. Although there were many opinions and evidences presented by various
authors as to whether Rizal did or did not retract. Nonetheless, until now there is no proof or any
justification to end the debate. When Rizal's family requested for the original copy, it was said that it
was lost.

2. Hypothetically, supposed that Dr. Jose Rizal did retract his statements against the Catholic Church

and the Spanish government, and you were given the chance to talk to Jose Rizal, what would you

say to him about his retraction?

- I will tell him it is useless to retract; what was done or written is done or written; he will be salvaged
anyway. Better stay firm to what you have written. And curse them before you have your last breath.

3. How do you think the history of the Philippines be written if it were true that Rizal retracted and

that he was not executed as a result? Could there had been a revolution?

- Rizal’s ‘retraction’ has nothing to do with the revolution as the revolution was already raging by the
time he was supposed to retract. It has everything to do with his Catholic faith, which, at that
moment, was virtually non-existent.
