Activity #6

1. What do you think was the reason why Rizal refused to the rescued by
Katipunan’s envoys?
 When the steamer entered Luzon, it's thought that the Katipuneros attempted
to help Rizal flee. He was concerned that his month-long stay on the ship
might cause him problems, so he requested that the governor general keep
him apart from everyone but his family.

2. Cite and discuss the defense of Rizal concerning the charges against him.
 José Rizal was accused of committing the crimes of insurrection and
organizing unlawful groups on December 11, 1896. In response, Rizal stated
that he does not contest the court's jurisdiction, that he has nothing to add
other than the fact that he did not engage in political activity while in exile in
Dapitan in 1892, that he has nothing to admit regarding the charges against
him, and that he has nothing to acknowledge regarding the declarations of
witnesses who he had neither met nor known. The manifesto, which aimed to
convince Filipinos to put an end to the uprising, contained five themes. He
began by clearing himself by asserting that he was never a participant in the
revolution and that his name had been used to recruit Filipinos.

3. If you were Rizal’s defense lawyer, what could you have done to save Rizal
from his death sentence?
 If I were Jose Rizal's defense counsel, I would look into the entire matter in
order to try to get Rizal spared the death penalty. I'll probably present some
important papers and supporting documentation to prevent authorities from
making him stand trial. I'll demonstrate to the Spanish authorities that their
charges against Rizal were untrue and that they ought to withdraw them
rather than execute him. Rizal was subjected to extremely brutal rule by the
Spanish government, which had a history of executing anyone who dared to
disagree with it. There were no trials; instead, prisoners were held without
being given the chance to defend themselves. All Filipinos experienced great
sadness during the Spanish era.
