Activity #8
Yes. Doña Teodora, Jose Rizal’s mother, had the greatest influence on his
personal growth. She was the one who first opened his and heart to the world
around him. His mother was his first teacher, she taught him how to read and
to appreciate reading as a way of learning and spending one’s time
meaningfully. Rizal learned to value time as a life’s most valuable gift as Doña
Theodora taught him to never waste a single moment of it. His mother taught
him numerous life lessons, including generosity, the importance of self-
improvement, the value of hard-earned money, and most significantly,
obedience.
2. Jose Rizal manifested great love and attachment for his mother in various
ways. Because of these, can we qualify Dr. Jose Rizal is a Mama’s Boy?
Explain your stand.
Yes He was a Mama’s boy because he was always obedient to his mother
and also Doctor Jose Rizal shows unconditional love for his mother was when
he shifted to medicine in his second year at the University of Sto. Tomas
when he learned that his mother’s vision was worsening. He specialized in
ophthalmology in Paris, in hopes of curing his mother’s blindness.
3. They say that a mother’s intuition is relatively strong. Was this possibly the
reason why Doña Lolay strongly opposed Rizal’s further education?
Elaborate your stand.
4. Rizal said about himself, “He still thinks that light is the most beautiful
thing in creation, and that it is worthwhile for a man to sacrifice his life for
it. “How do you explain this is relation to Rizal’s fate?
“Years have passed since then. The child has become a man … Steamships
have taken him across seas and oceans … He has received from experience
bitter lessons, much more bitter than the sweet lessons that his mother gave
him …
“Nevertheless, he has preserved the heart of a child. He still thinks that light is
the most beautiful thing in creation, and that it is worthwhile for a man to
sacrifice his life for it.”
