SOCIAL MEDIA, THE INTERNET AND

THE ‘DEATH OF THE NEWSPAPER’

INTRODUCTION

• The internet has undeniably, changed our culture.

• The argument is, with the internet providing free news, what is the future of the
newspaper?

• Is news Environmentally Friendly?

• Four billion tres worldwide are cut down annually.

NEWSPAPER

A newspaper is a scheduled publication containing news of current events, informative

articles, diverse features and advertising. It usually is printed on relatively inexpensive,
low-grade paper suach as newsprint.

News is the combination of the frist letters of the four directions: Norths, East, Wesr
and South.

A wide variety of material has been published in newspapers, including editorial

opinions, criticism, entertainment features sucha as crosswords, sudoku and
horoscopes; weather news; advice; food and other columns.
HISTORY OF INTERNET

The Internet was the resukt of some visionary thinking by people in the early 1960s.

The internet was designed in part to provide a comunications network.

Earlier, Internet was used by computer experts, engineers, scientists and librarians.

and archives.

homepage.

• Marissa Mayer of Google says that 80 % of people engage with news in this
way.

• A move from newspaper to article

Well. With new technology always comes the death or transformation of older
industries. Environmental concerns necessitate some of these changes, but money has
so far – almost across the board – proven to be far stronger motivation for change
than any responsibility to the planet. Still, we shouldn’t bemoan the loss of “old”
media like newspapers and magazines simply due to sentimental reasons. Certainly
there are more practical concerns such as the loss of reliable local journalism, which
suffers in much the same way as local industry and culture suffer due to economic and
cultural globalization. However, as people who care about the environment, we can
perhaps afford look on the bright side: fewer trees die to make newspapers (forests
are disappearing fast enough) and less pollution is produced from paper mills and via
newspaper distribution.

But what of the rise of social media? Is it making any positive impacts on the
environment? This is hard to measure. As far as I know there are no statistics on the
subject, but logically we can see that it has some, at the very least potentially, good
effects.

What we do know is that the Information Age provides new opportunities to spread
knowledge and consciousness about our environment, including how to live a more
eco-friendly life. The integration of these sites with Internet giants
like facebook further facilitates their positive influence on the masses. Information,
both good and bad, is literally at our fingertips.

Social media is also way of socializing without leaving your home. It is conceivable that
this might cut down on carbon emissions that would normally be used to get to
physical meetings. However, this part is just conjecture. If we expand the definition of
social media to include other web-based communication tools, we can see other ways
in which the Internet can help reduce our negative impact on the environment,
especially at the corporate level. For instance, conducting “virtual meetings” via
webcam, chat, whether with Skype or other VoIP systems, saves businesses and
organizations lots of money and time otherwise used for travel.
HOW DO AUDIENCES RECEIVE NEWS?

APPS

Biggest names in new have already established themselves on the iPad, tablets,
android.

App will search for stories of interest while you are offline.

In conclusion, the less trees being cut down, paper mills polluting the air and massive
distribution trucks on the road the better. Maybe I’m dumb, but I don’t see how
digitizing media means that it necessarily has to suffer in quality, whether locally or
internationally. Profit driven media will always cut costs to maximize profits anyway
and it was never subscriptions that paid for the bulk of news, it was advertizing, which
can obviously also be done on the web.
