INFORMATION AGE

DEFINE INFORMATION AGE;

• The Information Age is the idea that access to and the control of information is the
defining characteristic of this current era in human civilization.
DEFINE INFORMATION AGE;
• The Information Age
• also called the Computer Age, the Digital Age and the New Media Age, is coupled tightly
with the advent of personal computers,
• but many computer historians trace its beginnings to the work of the American
mathematician Claude E. Shannon.
• At age 32 and as a researcher at Bell Laboratories, Shannon published a landmark paper
proposing that information can be quantitatively encoded as a series of ones and zeroes.
Known as the "father of Information Theory,"
• Shannon showed how all information media, from telephone signals to radio waves to
television, could be transmitted without error using this single framework.
DEFINE INFORMATION AGE;
• By the 1970s, with the development of the Internet by the United States Department of
Defense and the subsequent adoption of personal computers a decade later,
• the Information or Digital Revolution was underway. More technological changes, such as
the development of fiber optic cables and faster microprocessors, accelerated the
transmission and processing of information.
DEFINE INFORMATION AGE;
• The World Wide Web,
• used initially by companies as an electronic billboard for their products and services,
morphed into an interactive consumer exchange for goods and information.
• Electronic mail (email ), which permitted near-instant exchange of information, was widely
adopted as the primary platform for workplace and personal communications.
• The digitization of information has had a profound impact on traditional media
businesses, such as book publishing, the music industry and more recently the major
television and cable networks.
DEFINE INFORMATION AGE;
• As information is increasingly described in digital form, businesses across many
industries have sharpened their focus on how to capitalize on the Information Age.
DEFINE INFORMATION AGE;
• Companies whose businesses are built on digitized information have become valuable
and powerful in a relatively short period of time.
• In "The companies that define the Information Age are the ones that know consumers
the best," author Larry Allen of Real Media Group points out that just as land owners held
the wealth and wielded power in the Agrarian Age and manufacturers such as Henry Ford
and Cyrus McCormick accumulated fortunes in the Industrial Age,
• the current Information Age has spawned its own breed of wealthy influential brokers,
from Microsoft's Bill Gates to Apple's Steve Jobs to Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg.
IMPACT OF INFORMATION AGE ON PEOPLE’S
LIVES
• Scientific progress in computer microchips have marked the beginning of the Information
Age period in human history during the second part of the last century.
• The technological advancements in communication and information processes have
greatly impacted our daily lives and have been the driving force of social evolution for the
last several decades.
• Ever since the Internet entered our daily lives, we have seen a rise in what has been
termed “social technologies” — essentially, any application of technology that facilitates
interaction.
IMPACT OF INFORMATION AGE ON PEOPLE’S
LIVES
• With the plethora of social media websites and automation services available to us and
accessible through a single pocket device, the way we interact with each other has
completely changed.
• How has this affected humans as social beings? Have we improved our engagement, or
has it suffered because of technology?
IMPACT OF INFORMATION AGE ON PEOPLE’S
LIVES
Social interaction moved online
• Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat — all these platforms share a common
characteristic: enabling communication and sharing of experiences across borders and
time constraints.
• You can easily greet your friends from different countries on their birthdays or any other
social occasion instantly, without worry about missing anything, since everything is
online.
IMPACT OF INFORMATION AGE ON PEOPLE’S
LIVES
• There are several factors that influence the fast development and adoption of
innovations.
• As world population grows, so does the number of Internet users across the globe.
• Furthermore, devices are getting more powerful, as smartphones today are more
powerful than some laptops 5 years ago.
• Lastly, software applications have been increasing in complexity in terms of capabilities,
but also decreasing in complexity of use.
IMPACT OF INFORMATION AGE ON PEOPLE’S
LIVES
• All these lead to some interesting results — for one, we spend more and more time online
(Britons spend more time on tech than asleep).
• However, evidence shows we still prefer human interaction.
• We can conclude that users want everything to be accessible online — but they want
someone to be on the other side.
• Digital media, then, should be seen as a vehicle to facilitate communication — not
replace it completely.
IMPACT OF INFORMATION AGE ON PEOPLE’S
LIVES
• A report published by the World Economic Forum provides interesting insights on how
people across the globe use social media and how it has affected our lives.
• Results show that the effects of technology on social interaction differ across countries.
• Generally, people from developing countries perceive effects of social technology better
than users from developed economies.
• Regardless of location, though, people mostly agree that social media helps them
maintain relationships with their friends.
IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE 21 ST CENTURY
• Social media are websites and applications (apps) for content sharing and collaboration
among communities of users online.
• The term encompasses social networks, microblogs, open-content repositories, photo or
video sharing, messaging apps, social gaming, and virtual worlds among diverse other
offerings.
• They represent a leading means of communication in the 21st century. Some of the best
known social media sites are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, and Snapchat.
Facebook alone has about 1.6 billion active users and Instagram has about 20 billion
images.

IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE 21 ST CENTURY
• New social media platforms are constantly being introduced and existing ones are
constantly evolving,
• which makes defining them or generalizing about them difficult.
• Broadly speaking, however, members of a social media digital platform elect to form one-
way or two-way communication links among one another.
• Members thus each become the hub of their own social network, and they can choose to
share messages or other digital content with some or all of those (often designated as
“friends” or “followers”) in their network.
IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE 21 ST CENTURY
• Those receiving the content may be encouraged to “like” it in response, to comment in
reply to it, or to share it with their own network.
• In some social media, businesses may also have some access to members’ networks in
the interest of advertising, promotion, or expanding their own audience.
• In contrast with traditional broadcasting or publishing media, the social media experience
tends to be interactive and personalized, and it is often optimized for mobile users to
encourage frequent interaction through smartphones.
IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE 21 ST CENTURY
• Popular content that is said to be “viral” because of how readily members share it can
propagate throughout a social media platform extremely rapidly. Content may also be
tagged (with hashtag text or other indexed flags) to aid its discovery in search.
• At their best, therefore, social media represent a fast, inexpensive way to spread a
message to a widely distributed audience. See also: Cellphone cameras;

IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE 21 ST CENTURY
• The influence of digital social media on societies around the world has been profound.
• Social media have affected both how and how often individuals stay in contact with
friends and family members.
• They gave a louder voice to many people whose messages had historically been
underrepresented in media because of racism, sexism, and other forms of bigotry.
IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE 21 ST CENTURY
• Yet social media also enabled the phenomenon of “cyberbullying” as a new form of
oppression.
• As social media rose in prominence, they powerfully disrupted the business models for
most newspapers, magazines, broadcasters, and other traditional media and hastened
the failure or transformation of many of them.
• Epidemiologists, sociologists, and informatics researchers often now use data mined from
social media to explore the spread of diseases, ideas, and trends through populations.

• The involvement of social media in education has given a new dimension to this industry.
• With the presence of social media in education industry, teaching has changed
drastically. The importance of social media has increased not just for students but also for
the teachers.
• Although, at times most of the parents do not take use of social media in education
positively, they think it can do more harm than benefit. But this combination (teen
students+ social media) is a great one if teachers understand and help students to make
effective use of this social media to build their knowledge base.

Information Literacy
• Information literacy means having the ability to recognize the quality of information.  This
is very much necessary in this digital era where information is easily accessible within a
few second. Although, there is no particular way to learn how to analysis the quality of
information, but it can be possible only when teacher’s guidance.
IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN OUR DAILY LIVES
• Use of social media under the strict guidance of teacher can help student to evaluate the
quality of information. After collecting the information, students should be able to
synthesize and present. This process of creating, analyzing and evaluating information
with proper exposure in social media helps student to develop critical thinking.
• In this entire process, the role of teacher or the importance of teacher is critical because
they are the one who guide their students in this process.
IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN OUR DAILY LIVES
Better and Increased Communication
• Various social media websites like Facebook offers great platform for study purpose.
Educators can use Facebook to set up the pages related to their lesson plans.
• Using online platform, students can easily collaborate with each other, even shy students
can participate more actively. Through various other platforms like Google Hangout or
Skype, teachers can easily initiate discussions or debate.
