THE ROLE OF AGRICULTURE LAND USES IN
DEVELOPMENT OF RURAL AREAS
(The case study of Mvuha village, Morogoro District)
Background information

Globally agriculture land area is approximately five billion hactres, or 38% of the global land
surface. About one-third of this is used as cropland while the remaining two-third consistis of
pastures for grazing livestock (FAO, 2019).Agriculture is a backbone of the economy of most
African countries employing the majority of the people especially in Rural areas (Delgado,
Hopkins and Kelly, 1998)Tanzania is among many African countries whose people are small
scale famers situated in Rural areas .Agricultural land in Tanzania is reported to be 396500 km2 (
World Bank, 2021).Tanzania`s economy is highly dependent on agriculture and the sector is the
major source of productive employment and income to the nation, with about 70% of population
employed and more than 80% of rural population employed in the sector (MAFS, 2006)

Proper agriculture land uses will lead to an increase in production activities in Rural areas.
Agriculture sector it helps more in alleviating poverty and enhacing food security to Rural areas
who are being affected by food insecurity (Miller et al 2010; Louw Nhemachena and Zyl, 2008).

Statement of the problem

Despite the improvement of agricultural activities done by the government emphasizing on


strategies to increase agriculture activities. In doing so leads to an increase in land pressure for
lands of agriculture practices. Leading to emergency of land conflicts between famers and
pastoralists. Most of Rural areas especially in villages lack planned lands for conducting
agricultural activities and management of Agricultural lands. Through proper management and
planning of agriculture land uses leads to development of Rural areas.’
Objectives of the study

Broad objective;

The main objective of this study is to explore into what extent are proper agriculture land uses
lead to development of Rural areas especially in villages

Specific objectives;

i. To identify various land uses leading to development of Rural areas


ii. To analyze how Agricultural land uses are being distributed in a village and how are
being managed
iii. To analyze challenges facing Rural areas on carrying out agricultural activities
iv. To recommend on effective proposal and distribution of Agricultural land uses in a
village

Research questions

i. What are the importance of existing agricultural land uses to the development of a
Village?
ii. What are the challenges to acquire, use and own Agricultural lands?
iii. How are Agricultural lands Spatial located and distributed in a Village and their
accessibility
