Project Proposal

1st TOPIC

Project Title: The Feasibility of Converting UP’s Jeepneys to E-Jeepneys

Introduction/Problem Description: This is to gauge the efficiency of converting the Diesel-
engine powered engines of UP Diliman jeeps to Electric Engines, in terms of cost, travel
comfort, and environmental impact.
Proposed Alternative Solutions: There are 2 main ways of handling this situation: either
convert all engines to electric engines, convert only key routes in UP Diliman, or remain in
the status quo.
Possible sources of Data/Information: Interviews with e-jeep project heads, papers, survey
results, resources on electric engines

2nd TOPIC

Project Title: E-pila as alternative to manual enlistment in enrollment procedures

Introduction/Problem Description: Manual enlistment, which is to go in line to get a subject or
course a student needs, has been evidently physically taxing and a waste of energy. The
purpose of this project is to convert the process of manual enlistment to online and to
analyze its efficiency in terms of comfort, time, user satisfaction and practicability.
Proposed Alternative Solutions: One proposed alternative solution is to convert the manual
enlistment into an online process where it also acts like a line where “first come, first served”.
Another is to remain in the status quo.
Possible sources of Data/Information: Data from student councils of different colleges.
Survey results, interviews with those who have gone through manual enlistment, feasibility
on software engineers/computer engineers.

3rd TOPIC

Project Title: Alternative Way to Manage MRT

Introduction/Problem Description: While it remains as a good means of transportation (it is
fast!), it is by no means reliable and comfortable. Everyday, a number of people who need to
use MRT aren't able to access its services on time, usually forcing them to go to work ahead
of time because of the waiting time involved in riding one, to avoid getting late on their way
to work. This is particularly very evident on the North Avenue, Cubao and Taft Avenue
stations where you can see the line of the people waiting extending past the ticket booths,
literally forming zigzag lines just to fit in the station. In the North Avenue, the line goes all the
way down into the sidewalks along EDSA. Clearly this is a problem.
Proposed Alternative Solutions: One proposed alternative solution is to monitor the volume
of the people at each station and estimate how much people should be taken in at each
station to be able to service at least a fraction of those people, through a central control
center. This prevents non-terminal MRT stations (esp. Cubao) from being flooded with
people like it usually do, however increasing the volume at terminal stations. Another
alternative is to add more train units, as well as docking at terminal stations, and make them
all go in a cyclic manner, all spaced equally apart. When the volume of passengers increase
then the management can add more train units via trains from the docks, and when it
decreases, more trains can be docked. This minimizes waiting time and is dynamic, able to
minimize waste by serving what demand present. Of course this solution requires a central
control center of alternative 1. The last proposed alternative is to just leave it as is.
Possible sources of Data/Information: Surveys, Statistical Data, etc.
