Goodbye Australia, Hello World!

By: Adele Goh.

Knowing that were setbacks in doing this, he still continued on. Liam Hall- Muir, a 25
year old from Newcastle, Australia, is extremely passionate about both travelling and
volunteering. Before completely starting his journey that changed his life, Liam was
just like everyone else, going through a 9 to 5 job daily.

I had the opportunity to meet Liam when he was travelling in Penang with his
friend, back in 2019. Upon speaking to him, I was taken aback in a good way on his
positive outlook and easy going nature. Liam and I spent the week together exploring
Penang and became good friends. Liam was a very interesting person who has a very
unique aspect on life and that was why I have chosen to write about him. Therefore in
this piece, I have chosen to write about his travel and volunteering experiences.

So what inspired Liam to travel and volunteer? According to the man himself, his
decision to both travel and volunteer actually came down to two factors, which were
opportunity and realisation. Back in the day when Liam was his in teenage years, he
was fortunate enough to score a job as an athletics instructor. With that, being in
athletics allowed him to travel within local schools in Australia, teaching the kids both
running and ball skills. Not only that, being able to help out those kids made him able
to keep an eye for potential and talent, therefore, putting in a good word for those kids
who want to succeed as athletes.
At the age of 22, Liam received another opportunity through his work, which is to
volunteer his time teaching running and rugby skills to school children in the Islands
of Tonga. After completing his volunteering time in Tonga, he then applied and got in
to a 4 week university programme in Kathmandu, Nepal. In Nepal, Liam was
analysing the social problems within the country.

“I came away from both experiences realising that, there is a big world out there
and I wanted to travel but to also have a positive impact on the places I go. Naturally,
I put the two together.” said Liam.

The other source of inspiration that inspired Liam was his mother. His mum
started volunteering at the age of 50. According to Liam, his mother has not done
much travelling until she decided to volunteer with Red Cross Society International.
Through Red Cross, she has worked in Bangladesh, Mongolia and Indonesia. While
Liam miss his mother, he is always proud of the work that she was doing and
therefore, that serves as an inspiration to him. His mother would also always remind
him “you are never to old to make a change.”

The countries that Liam had both traveled and volunteered in are India, Nepal and
the Islands of Tonga. During his time in Tonga, he would travel to a different school
each day and he would coach both rugby and athletics skills to the kids. Moving on to
India, he was specifically based in one school over their Christmas break. During his
time there, he would play running or ball games with the kids as well as spending
time with them as a house parent which also included long walks throughout the
jungle.

The last country, Nepal. Liam actually traveled there twice. In this particular
volunteering, he went back to Nepal after his university exchange programme and
worked with a female empowerment charity called “Mitrataa.” He would mainly
spend his days doing office admin work and also helping out in areas where he could.
Travelling and volunteering both is not as easy as imagined. There are and will
always be challenges along the way. According to Liam again, the logistics of getting
to his destination can be difficult. For example, the school that he stayed at during his
time in India required extensive travelling. Liam had to fly in to New Delhi from
Australia, then from New Delhi, he had to fly in to Silliguri, then proceeded to get a 3
hour car ride into the mountains.

The second challenge would be culture shock. “It was something I suffered from,
terribly.” Liam said with a laugh. Culture shock is defined as an experience when a
person moves to a cultural environment which is different from one’s own. Symptoms
include a feeling of disorientation, this is caused from a person experiencing a culture
and or way of life very different from their own.

The third challenge faced is working in large groups. During his time in the
Islands of Tonga, he travelled over with a team of 15 people. He mentioned that it was
somewhat difficult working in groups due to the potential of personality clashes in a
challenging and stressful environment. Not only that, there was sometimes the
language barrier too.

Moving on to the most important things that most travelers would want to know,
did both travelling and volunteering affected other commitments? According to Liam,
it was both a yes and a no. “I had to miss out on Christmas back home one year due to
being away, but I was fortunate enough to have an encouraging boss at work and
family at home, so I was able not to suffer too much work wise from being away. Not
only that, my family have always been extremely supportive of both my travels and
volunteering, which I am absolutely grateful for.” said Liam.

The next most important thing would be the setbacks faced during both travelling
and volunteering. The main setbacks faced by Liam throughout his travels and
volunteering days would be the physical setback of fatigue, due to always being on
the move and mental exhaustion too could be a potential setback. “One of the best
ways to overcome these setbacks would be going into your travels with open mind.
By doing so and having a rough plan on what you will be doing there before should
offset any major encounters.” said Liam.

Liam has truly enjoyed all his travels and his volunteering work. He first started
travelling when he was 10 and today at the age of 25, it would be a total of 15 years of
travelling. As for volunteering, he has been volunteering for exactly 3 years now.
Back in 2019 when I met Liam, I truly saw how travelling and volunteering made him
happy and fulfilled. He had such a positive outlook when it comes to topics about
travelling and volunteering that you can see his eyes sparkle with excitement when he
talks about his experiences.

Not only that, upon spending the entire week with Liam, I have too realised that
both travelling and volunteering made him a better person, seeing him improving
every step of the way as he continued to do better in life. Besides that, him sharing his
experience with me also made me realise that “you are never to old to make a
change.” just like what his mother always reminded him of.

Finally, to conclude this piece, Liam had given me a few wise words to share
with the readers who wish to travel and volunteer in the upcoming future. The first
would be, do not expect things to go to plan as it is all part of the adventure when it
comes to both travelling and volunteering. Secondly, don’t think that you need to be
perfect. The people you will be visiting knows that you are volunteering your time
and they will be absolutely grateful as long as you are positive and joyful. Last but not
least, always feel free to give people nicknames, as it is a habit of Liam’s, and always
remember to have fun.
