Tribal behavior
Belonging to a tribe has always been an important part of our history. For long periods in the past,
being a member of a group helped people to survive. It’s easy to see that we’re stronger if we join
together, and being in a group can keep us safe from danger. But most people in the world today do
not face the kind of danger we used to have hundreds or thousands of years ago.
Modern tribes are not about saving your life and they’re not about keeping you safe from danger. In
many cases, people join a group because they share common interests. Others are motivated by a need
to do something different from their parents—even to shock them.
However, one of the main reasons why people join a group is that they feel good about belonging
to a community. Being part of a subculture is a way for a young person to talk honestly about their
thoughts and feelings without fear of criticism. Finding other people who share their thoughts is an
important part of that process. It doesn’t mean that they will always belong to that group—we all
change as we get older—but it is often exactly what we need at a particular time in our lives.
These days, of course, we are more likely to belong to online groups. Online groups are not a poorer
or weaker form of tribe. They are an important connection to others in a world where we perhaps don’t
find the time or the opportunity to meet in person. But what’s most important is our shared experience,
and the internet allows us to do that with people all over the world—something that wasn’t possible
in the past.

b It stops us from forming much stronger tribes.
c It allows us to share more of our own experiences than we could in the past.
