DISTINGUISHED UP ALUMNAE

Famous women who are UP alumni and friends of UP come together in the all-star cast of “UP
Naming Mahal,” the grand musical review celebrating UP’s 91-year history, to be staged on June
18 (UP Foundation Day) at 8 p.m. and June 19 at 3 p.m. at the University Theater in Diliman.
They will participate in the segment recalling the “Cadena de Amor” ritual, held annually in U.P.
from 1934 to 1968. The ritual pays to the virtues expected of UP women.

Spanning several generations of UP alumnae, the Cadena de Amor cast includes Atty. Pacita de
los Reyes- Phillips, Dr. Estefania Aldaba-Lim, Elsa Syjuco, Lydia Baskina-Espiritu, Nellie
Favis-Villafuerte, Ruth Nguyen-Carpio, Alma Laminta-Javier, Elisa “Boots” Anson- Roa, Gloria
Manalang- Angara, Cynthia Aguilar- Villar, Health Undersecretary Susan Pineda- Mercado,
Nelia Cruz- Sarcol, and Dr. Helena Z. Benitez.

“U.P Naming Mahal” is directed by Tony Mabesa, with music by Ryan Cayabyab, and libretto
by Bien Lumbera. Floy Quintos co- directs. The all- UP cast and crew of this grand musicale, the
first by UP about UP, includes The Eraserheads, Nina Alagao, Ogie Alcasid, Michelle Aldana,
Angel Aquino, Harlene Bautista, Jeffrey Hidalgo, Earl Ignacio, Nanette Inventor, Agot Isidro.
