1. Who are the major stakeholders to consider when developing a communication response?
Identify what is important to each of them?

The Major Stakeholder’s of the Lac-Megantic Train Derailment were:

a) Edward Burkhardt, (Chairman MMA)

Edward Burkhadt, a graduate in Industrial administration with an experience of over 58


years was the chairman of the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway Limited (MMA), a
subsidiary of the Rail World Incorporated (RWI).

Role

As the train belonged to the MMA, Mr. Burkhardt, being the chairman was liable to answer
all the questions that arose from the mishappening. Everyone wanted a clarification and
accountability for the disaster and what action were taken post the deadly event

b) Victims

The disaster caused to severe consequences in which several people lost their lives and
belongings in the derailment without being involved in any manner with the event.

These people were looking for the statement from the MMA as they were expecting
compensation from the MMA and the government.

c) Town residents

The catastrophe was spread all along the town of Lac-megantic because of the fire that was
constantly forming from the tanks, which led to movement of over 1000 people to safer
places. Also, the town was all spread by toxic particles in air and water making them
polluted, and thus resident all over the town were affected by this disaster.

d) Media

Media was constantly working on the coverage of the derailment and the communication
channel between the authorities and the public was keenly involved with the disaster.
