b) An electrical device is made up of three components A, B and C. The probabilities of


each of the components A, B, C failing are respectively 0.05, 0.16, 0.15. The device
works only if all components work. Assuming components fail independently, calculate
the probability of
(i) all three components failing;
(1 mark)
(ii) at least two components failing;
(4 marks)
(iii) the device failing.

Answer two questions in this Section Each question is worth 20 marks

8. a) A component is produced at the rate of 1,000 per day. Ocassionally there is a problem
in the production process and a faulty component is produced. The numbers of faulty
components produced over 10 consecutive days were recorded as

29, 32, 26, 29, 31, 24, 37, 30, 33, 29

(i) Calculate the mean, median and mode number of faulty components produced in a
day over this period.
(3 marks)
(ii) Using this data, an estimate of the probability that an individual component is faulty
is 0.03. A sample of 10 components is taken.
Using the Binomial distribution,
(I) find the probability that such a sample contains precisely 2 faulty components
(give your answer to 3 decimal places);
(2 marks)
(II) find the probability that such a sample contains less than 3 faulty components
(give your answer to 3 decimal places);
(3 marks)
(III) determine the mean number of faulty components in such a sample.
(2 marks)

b) (i) Use Gaussian elimination to solve the simultaneous equations

x + 2y + 3z = 9
2x + y − 4z = 1
3x + 3y + 2z = 16

(7 marks)
(ii) What happens if the coefficient of z in the third equation is changed from 2 to -1?
(3 marks)
