Time allowed: 3 hours
This is a closed book examination
Answer: all questions from Section A plus
two questions from Section B
Candidates attempting more than two questions from Section B will be
assessed only on their best two attempts.
The total number of questions in this paper is 8
All questions in Section A carry equal marks and all questions in Section
B carry equal marks
Start each question on a new page and carefully identify your answers
with the correct question number
For this examination you will be supplied with the following:

Answer two questions in this Section Each question is worth 20 marks
8. a) A component is produced at the rate of 1,000 per day. Ocassionally there is a problem
in the production process and a faulty component is produced. The numbers of faulty
components produced over 10 consecutive days were recorded as
(i) Calculate the mean, median and mode number of faulty components produced in a
day over this period.
(3 marks)
(ii) Using this data, an estimate of the probability that an individual component is faulty
is 0.03. A sample of 10 components is taken.
Using the Binomial distribution,
(I) find the probability that such a sample contains precisely 2 faulty components
(give your answer to 3 decimal places);
(2 marks)
(II) find the probability that such a sample contains less than 3 faulty components
(give your answer to 3 decimal places);
(3 marks)
(III) determine the mean number of faulty components in such a sample.
(2 marks)
x + 2y + 3z = 9
2x + y − 4z = 1
3x + 3y + 2z = 16
