Aspirin

Mechanism of action

Fey
Analgesic, Antipyretic and NSAID

Low dose Platelet aggregation

Inhibit Prostaglandin

• Analgesia
• Anti inflammatory activity
• Platelet aggregation inhibition
Fever by acting on brains heat regulating centre
Promote vasodilation and swelling

Used for
Mild to moderate pain, fever
Various inflammatory conditions

Reduction of risk of death and MI


In patients with previous infarction or unstable angina pectoris
Or recurrent transient ischemia attacks Or stroke in patients
who have had transient brain ischemia caused by platelet emboli

Secondary prevention of severe pre-eclampsia

Dose
For pain and fever : >16 yrs and adults
is 300 mg to 1g every 4 to 6 hrs without exceeding 4 g/day for 1 -3 days

For prevention of pre-eclampsia


75 mg once daily
From 12th to 32nd week of gestation

Shouldn’t be administered to patients with
• allergy to ASPIRIN and NSAIDs
• Peptic ulcer - Coagulation disorders - Haemorrhage
• Severe hepatic, renal or cardiac impairment

Shouldn’t be administered to children


PARACETAMOL should be used instead

Administered with caution to elderly patients and patients with asthma

Indicated doses shouldn’t be exceeded

Side effects

Aspirin may cause :
• Allergic reactions • Epigastric pain
• Peptic ulcer • Haemorrhage

Dizziness, tinnitus may also occur In overdose


Reye’s syndrome may occur in children
( encephalopathy and severe hepatic disorders )

Precautions
Should be taken during meals preferably with a LOT of water

Aspirin shouldn’t be combined with


Methotrexate, Anticoagulants and NSAIDS

Monitor combination with : Insulin and corticosteroids

In pregnancy : AVOIDED in the treatment of pain and fever


PARACETAMOL can be used instead

For the prevention of pre-eclampsia


75 mg/day shouldn’t be exceeded

Avoided in breast feeding PARACETAMOL can be used instead
