1 Introduction
Welcome to the Lely manual, the place where you can find
technical information, operating instructions, maintenance
procedures and troubleshooting information for the
Lely Welger AP baler.
Study and understand this information thoroughly before you
operate the Lely Welger AP baler. Failure to do so could result
in personal injury or damage to equipment. Please consult your
local Lely service provider if you do not understand the
information in this manual, or if you need additional information.
All information in this manual has been compiled with care. Lely
shall not be liable for errors or faults in this manual. The
recommendations are meant to serve as guidelines. All
instructions, pictures and specifications in this manual are
based on the latest information that was available at the time of

1.1 The Lely Welger AP baler
The Lely Welger AP baler is a baler that produces small square
bales from dry agricultural material such as wheat straw, hay
and alfalfa.
The Lely Welger AP baler is pulled by a tractor.
The packer, cross-feeder, ram, knotter device and pick up are
driven entirely via torsionally rigid shafts and gears. This
ensures high performance baling results, quality bales and a
long life time.
The Packer Feed consists of two (AP 830 has 3) self-deflecting
packers which prevent blockage caused by foreign objects or
damage to the machine. In case of an overload the packers can
mostly deflect and then automatically reposition themselves
ready for operation. After several ram strokes, the blockage will
be cleared. The benefits are clear due to the use of a patented
hydro packer, a further development of the tried and tested self-
deflecting packers.
Two friction clutches; one in front and one behind the flywheel
protect the universal joint and the tractor as well as the baler
drive. On the AP 530 and the AP 630, an additional shear bolt
protects the drive should an unforeseen blockage occur. On the
AP 730 / 830, this function is fully automated with an auto-reset
clutch.
The bale thrower P23, is an accessory. The thrower is driven
via its own hydraulic system and allows maximum use of the
baler’s performance. The baler is no longer restricted by the
speed of a manual worker during loading.

This operating manual is subject to all users of this machine. It
provides important information on the use, operation,
maintenance, cleaning, transport and safety of the machine.
Omission of maintenance and cleaning or wrong operation will
cause an increased safety risk, a higher wear and tear as well
as decreased performance.
Read and understand the operating manual very carefully
before you start operating the machine. If personnel lack of
required knowledge is missing, the knowledge must be received
by training and instructions.
The operating manual must always be available wherever the
machine is in use.
Directions mentioned in the text such as left, right, front, rear,
up, down are understood in direction of travel.

Technical data:
All technical date, measurements and weights are for
informational usage only and are not binding.

On road driving:
Each country has own on road regulations. In case of
deviations between the manufacturer and country where the
machine is used, the country regulations are obliged.
The speed limit of the machine during road transport complies
with country regulations. The manufacturer speed limit may be

1.7 Proper use
 The AP baler has been built exclusively for the production
of bales compressed from grain crops or hay from grasses
lying on the ground (proper use). Usage going beyond that
does not constitute proper use. The manufacturer is not
liable for damage resulting from improper use; the operator
alone bears the risk.
 Proper use also includes adherence to the operating,
maintenance and servicing conditions prescribed by the
manufacturer.
 The attachment of auxiliary equipment to the machine other
than at the positions provided by the factory is prohibited.
 The relevant accident prevention regulations, regional
safety standards and other generally recognized safety
regulations in particular, are to be adhered to.
 Unauthorized alterations and the installation of non-
approved parts and equipment on the machine exclude any
liability on the part of the manufacturer for damage resulting
from this. Only original Lely spare parts are to be used.
Components covered by CE regulations must conform to
these regulations.
 The machine may only be operated, maintained and
repaired by persons who are familiar with such work and
instructed on the dangers involved.
 The relevant accident prevention regulations and all other
generally accepted safety rules must be observed.
 The basic requirements concerning safety and health
protection must be fulfilled. The generally accepted safety
rules must be observed.

any liability of the manufacturer for any damage resulting
therefrom.
The type approval, declaration of conformity and the CE sign
lose their validity by changes made to safety relevant parts.

1.9 End of life

The decommissioning of the machine has to take place in a
proper way. Dispose all components in compliance with the
applicable regulations and laws.

Dismounting of the machine is only allowed by qualified

persons.

Maintenance Safety
In addition to the general safety instructions:
 Switch off the tractor engine, disconnect the Power-Take-Off
(PTO) and stop all moving parts, wait until machine has
come to a complete standstill, depressurize the hydraulic
system, before doing maintenance on the AP baler and P23
thrower.
 Never reach into moving parts or parts that can start to
move.
 Before performing any activity on a gearbox after operation,
first permit it to cool down.
 Make sure all covers and guards are reinstalled when
maintenance work is complete.
 Obey the maintenance schedule in this manual.
 Do not modify the AP baler and P23 thrower.
 Only use genuine Lely parts.
 Maintenance work may be carried out by trained expert
personnel only.

Fire Prevention
The harvested crop can easily ignite! To prevent fire:
 Remove crop remains.
 Ensure there are no oil leaks.
 Overheating of machine parts can cause fires! To prevent
overheating of machine parts: observe the lubrication chart.
If any machine parts overheat: find and remove cause.
 Keep the electrical systems of tractor and machine and the
exhaust system of the tractor in proper condition.
 The existing wiring must not be used for any other
consumers than those installed in the factory or approved
by the manufacturer. Overloading the electrical lines leads
to excessive heating.
 Do not smoke in the vicinity of the machine.

Noise protection
The noise level during normal field work is subject to variations
which depend on the one hand on the noise level of the tractor
and on the other hand on the deployment conditions of this
machine.
The generated noise level, measured at the head height of the
driver inside a tractor with cabins and closed window, under
normal operating conditions, is less than 70 dB (A). The
combined noise level of machine and tractor primarily depends
on the level of the noise from the tractor (radios are an
additional source of noise).

3.2 Functional principle
The Lely Welger AP baler is exclusively for producing
compressed square bales from agricultural crop material lying
on the ground.
The bale cycle has 5 steps:
1. Pick up the material with the Pick-Up unit.
2. Transport the material into the compressing chamber.
3. Compress the material and form the bale.
4. Tie the bale.
5. Eject the bale

Steps 1-3 are continuously.

The baler has three possibilities to eject the bale:

1. Directly to the ground when leaving the baler
compression chamber.
2. With the hinged loading chute onto the trailer.
3. With the bale thrower Lely Welger P23 by throwing the
baler onto a pulled behind trailer.

The Bale thrower P23 is hydraulically driven and has its own
independent hydraulic system.
The driving power is transmitted from fly wheel and V-belt drive
to the hydraulic pump.
A hydraulic oil tank is mounted on the baler, which supplies the
hydraulic pump and motor.

3.3 Commissioning
Adapting the drive shaft
Make a note of the maximum operating length LB (Figure 1). Try
to achieve as much overlap Pu as possible. The drive shaft may
be extended by no more than half of the overlap LZ available in
the pushed-together state Pu.
lf necessary, adjust the length of the shaft.
 To do this, hold the shaft halves next to each other in the
shortest operating position and mark out (Figure 2).
 Shorten inner and outer guard tubes by equal amounts so
that a sliding travel of 50 mm is retained in the closest
operating position.
Figure 1
 Shorten inner and outer special-section tubes by the same
amount as the guard tubes.
 Round off the cut edges and carefully remove any filings.
Smear grease on sliding special-section tubes.

Figure 2
Guard casings
To open the guard casings on the AP baler, the hexagon head
of the catch is turned counter-clockwise with a 13 mm spanner
and the casing is removed from the machine (Figure 3).
To close the cover, the panel is pressed against the machine
until the catch can be heard to engage.
To open the guard casing of the flywheel, the catch springs on
the locking clasps are to be pushed back with a small screw-
driver or similar (Figure 4).

Figure 20
Pick-up support wheel
The baler can be fitted with an adjustable pick-up support wheel
to ensure that the pick-up remains at the correct distance from
the ground even on uneven fields.
1  Adjust the support wheel higher or lower in one of the three
specified holes. The clearance between tines and ground
should be 2 cm when the pick-up is lowered (Figure 21).

3.5.4 Setting bale density
Before starting work:
 Loosen the tension flaps (AP 630, AP 730 and AP 830) on
8
both sides of the baling channel by turning the spindles 7
(Figure 22).
 Turn the hand cranks 8 clockwise 5 turns from loose point of
the tensioning springs.
 Start working until the first bale leaves the baling chamber.
 Set the required baling density when baler is working by
gradually tightening spindles 7 and hand cranks 8.
7
Always tighten the tension flaps first before increasing the
Figure 22 baling density with hand cranks 8.

3.5.5 Setting bale length

 Turn the adjusting nut 9 in the direction of the arrow for
longer bales (Figure 23).
 Turn the adjusting nut 9 in the opposite direction of the arrow
for shorter bales.

3.5.6 Bale thrower P23*

Danger! Throwing bales

Effect: Danger to life or serious injuries.
 Only operate the P23 thrower with a suitable trailer behind the
AP baler!
 Nobody must stay within the throwing range during
commissioning.
8
 Adjust the throwing distance with lever 8 (Figure 24). The
9 bale must impact safely on the trailer.
 Examine the throwing distance continuously during filling the
trailer.
Figure 24  Adjust the slewing motion of the P23 thrower with lever 9
(Figure 24).

Bale deposition on the field with P23

The bale thrower can be changed from throwing to depositing
11 the bales on to the field.
 Remove sliding shield 10 from top to bottom position
according to Figure 25. Front fixing rod from bottom thrower
10 frame is removed to hold sliding shield in top position.
 Disconnect trailer hitch and move bale thrower into central
position. Lock the thrower in position with bolt 11
(Figure 25).

3.5.7 Clearing blockages

Cross-feeder with deflecting mechanism as overload

protection:
The cross-feeder and packer of the baler are equipped with an
automatic overload safeguard. The tines of the cross-feeder
and hydraulic packer work automatically.
The machine can often work itself free in the event of a
blockage:
 Stop the tractor.
 Reduce the speed of the PTO drive shaft by half.

The plug of material is pushed by the cross-feeder into the

baling channel and the machine then runs free again.

If the tines are deflected frequently, this indicates that the

machine is working at its load limit.

Note!
Continuous deflection increases wear in the drive of the
machine. It is advisable to drive the tractor slower.

Caution! Turning the fly wheel!

Effect: Serious material damage.
Do NOT remove the blockage by turning the PTO drive shaft or
flywheel in reverse direction.
Doing so can permanently bend the flat springs of the cross-
feeder and damage the hydraulic packer.

4 Troubleshooting
The wide range of operating conditions means that we cannot
give precise rules of action for all possible circumstances.
Ground condition, swath density, condition of baling material,
improper handling or poor care of the machine can result in
malfunctions.
Our Customer Service department is available should you
experience a problem you cannot cope with. In general, though,
you should be able to handle most situations by referring to the
following table.
