A PROPASAL ON SECURITY MANAGEMENT AT

VIPINGO RIDGE AIRSTRIP.

INTRODUCTION.
This is a proposal pointed at changes to be made to curb security threat
at Vipingo ridge airstrip. Our data collection methodology for this
finding was through observations and interviews. This proposal
purposely aims at improving security management at Vipingo ridge
airstrip.
SITUATIONS AT VIPINGO RIDGE AIRSTRIP
Based on interview and observation made at Vipingo ridge airstrip on
25th May 2021 as from 1300hrs to1600hrs on regard to its security
performance, below are the situations encountered:
i. Low security manpower.
As observed from the airstrip, security at hand is only two in numbers.
This is low, contrary to Kenya civil aviation authority security standards
of a commercial airstrip.
ii. Poor screening and passengers.
The screening of passengers to board is not done professionally. The use
of metal detector handle is not thorough and a mix up of flight
passengers and non-passengers at the flight waiting bay.
iii. Insufficient security equipment.
The Vipingo ridge airstrip security only has a two-metal detector handle
gadget for screening the passagers.no any other security equipment
reinforces such as CCTV surveillance and baggage x-ray machine and
puffer machines.
iv. Security dog surveillance.
As a requirement by Kenya civil aviation authority security standards of
a commercial airstrip, the Vipingo ridge airstrip do not uphold the
deployment of security dogs for baggage checking.

SOLUTIONS
a. Increase manpower.
This is to curb the few number of the security personnel at the airstrip
thus yield faster screening of passenger and increased security vigilance,
since there are no third eye watch CCTV surveillance at the airstrip.
b. Proper screening.
This short coming can be addressed by training the security guard on the
proper use of the screening gadgets. This operation is practically
possible.one day training on the proper available gadget.
c. Precure more security equipment.
The Vipingo ridge airstrip management should look into securing more
scanning machines to improve the security level. Installing walk through
metal detector is highly recommended, explosive detection machines as
well to be employed.
CCTV surveillance is a priority in security management in a sensitive
environment like airstrip. The metal detectors handle should be
increased too at least.
d. Security dog surveillance.
Dog deployment at airstrip as a requirement by Kenya civil aviation
authority is purposely to sniff into passenger’s baggage to detect any
prohibited items and explosives on board, thus the available well trained
security dogs at Vipingo Ridge should be part of security check at the
airstrip.
FURTHER RECOMMENDATION
Having identified the security shortcomings at the airstrip, we further
recommend that; the security officers to retake their training specifically
on the proper use of the available metal detector handle -this takes 2hrs-
4hrs training thus should be effected as soon as possible.
The security officers should further be exposed back to training on
practical identification of explosives, how they look, their appearance
and not by show of such details on a picture. The officers should have a
direct contact with the explosives, see, touch and feel. This is more
appealing-states’ref’security interviewee,’’we were only shown on a
picture how explosives look like but I have never seen any explosives
with a naked eyes’’ on the same lane, the interviewee could not even
describe how uranium explosives look like.
The airstrip should by then identify the restricted area whereby only
passengers waiting for the flights are authorized to access. Non-
passengers bay should be provided separately to avoid mix up. This is a
security threat- a screened passenger should not be in contact with a
non-passenger. A practical quick solution to this- with the current
available passenger waiting bay, only clients in the manifest list should
be vetted, screened and allowed into the passengers waiting bay. This
should be effected immediately as The Vipingo Ridge management digs
into building a non-passenger waiting bay for those who sees off and
waits for their family and friends at the airstrip.
For the benefit of passengers’ safety and image of the Vipingo Ridge
airstrip; one-two security officers should be at the airstrip specifically to
be on watch for passengers movement. This is a quick inject as the
security management looks into CCTV surveillance installation.
CONCLUSION
From the detailed information collected from our observations and
findings made on 25th May 2021 at Vipingo ridge airstrip, there is a need
on the change of safety and security management, technology advances,
public demands, customer service satisfaction in order to meet all the
requirement stated by the Kenya civil aviation authority. We highly
recommend this proposal to be effected.
