White, S. (2020, Nov 03). Opinion: Testing is the key to reviving travel and tourism.

Montreal Gazette. Retrieved from https://montrealgazette.com/opinion/opinion-

testing-is-the-key-to-reviving-travel-and-tourism.

The article talks about a pilot project in Alberta that allows certain incoming

travellers, including international visitors, to quarantine for only 48 hours. According to

White (2020), Canada has mishandled the safe reopening of their economy to domestic and

international air travel. The project offers testing services to those travellers arriving at

Canadian airports, after which they are required to self-isolate within 48 hours to curb the

spread of COVID-19. According to the article, if this project succeeds, it will help the Canada

to reopen their economy to allow international travels since their economy has been

devastated by the pandemic.

I fully support the content of White’s article, “Testing is the key to reviving travel and

tourism.” With the adverse impact of COVID-19 in the worldwide economy, including

Canada’s economy, it is essential to look on ways to reopen international travels to help boost

the country’s revenue in from the tourism sector. This article will enlighten the citizens on the

safety measures that they should follow without risking their lives and those of their fellow

citizens. COVID-19 testing services explained in this article is relevant to the entire country

since it will help them run their international activities without spreading the virus. The

current policies are devastating people’s livelihoods and lives as hard travel lockdowns

cripple most economies. Therefore, testing can help in gradual revival of economy.

Senger, E. (2020, October 8). Midwifery is in demand, but increasing school program

capacity isn't easy. MacLean’s Magazine. Retrieved from

https://www.macleans.ca/education/midwifery-demand-scchool-program-capacity/.
3

The article talks about the high demand for midwifery in Canada with keen students

who are eager to train, but universities can only admit 150 annually (Senger, 2020). The

article explains the experience of a third year midwifery student at Ryerson University, Maha

Maryam. She explains the transition in the field of midwifery over the years and argues that

increasing capacity in Canadian midwifery schools requires a huge amount of government

will, backed up with funding to add seats in new programs.

I fully support the content of this article. Increasing government focus on training

individuals who want to enrol in midwifery programs will not only help such people to

achieve their ambitions, but it will also improve the safety of pregnant mothers and their

infants. Midwifery services are important to the entire society since it creates awareness for

the safety of both mothers and infants. Consequently, it reduces infant mortality rate in the

country, which is beneficial to the nation. This article creates awareness to the need for new

quality midwifery services, which is better than the traditional ones. This article is relevant

since it helps the government of Canada to focus on ways to improve midwifery services by

suggesting more funding to be channelled to that sector.

Braganza, C. (2020, November 2). How Exercise Can Boost Your Flu Shot. Chatelaine.

Retrieved from https://www.chatelaine.com/health/exercise-flu-shot/.

Braganza (2020) in her article, “How exercise can boost your flu shot,” talks about the

need to boost an individual’s flu shot using regular exercises. Medical research has long

suggested that regular exercise is a general immune-system booster, but a slated of recent

studies show that it can also improve your immune response to vaccines, making them more

effective in the long run. Braganza concludes that focusing on exercises will boost an

individual’s immunity, protecting them against infections such as flu.

4

With the confirmed advantages of regular exercises, I fully support the content of

Braganza’s article. The article helps Canadians to keep fit, which makes them healthier in all

perspectives not only against flu but also for some chronic diseases. Some of the confirmed

benefits of regular exercise include health benefits up to a 35% lower risk of coronary heart

disease and stroke, lowers risk of colon cancer, breast cancer, osteoarthritis, hip fracture, and

early death. Therefore, this article is beneficial to both the citizens and communities in

Canada since it creates awareness on ways to healthy living.

McGill, L. (2020, Oct 27). The Many Ways We’re Failing Our Children’s Mental Health.

The Walrus. Retrieved from https://thewalrus.ca/the-many-ways-were-failing-our-

childrens-mental-health/.

This article talks about a suicide attempt by most children and adolescents due to

mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. According to Rob

Billard, a social worker and former youth crisis worker, the increase in suicide rates among

children does not mean that children are different, however, it means that the society has

changed. Young people are left to their own devices to deal with really heavy stuff. McGill

(2020) also reports that the tendency of young people to spread among peer groups is another

cause of youth mental health crisis. There is need for young people to be given attention and

emergency services to avoid more suicide cases.

This article is necessary since it creates awareness on the importance of caring for

young people to avoid suicide cases. The counselling services given to the adolescents does

not only help them but also have ultimate impact on the community since it leads to the

production of focused individuals. It is also beneficial to the country at large due to reduced

cases of juvenile delinquency. With a record increase in the rate of suicide among youths, the
5

services explained in this article is relevant since it helps to correct the notion that youths

have changed, and suggests more attention to be given to the m from the society.

Auger, O. (2020 Oct. 30). Virtual, mental health service improves access to critical support.

The Star. Retrieved from https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2020/10/30/virtual-

mental-health-service-improves-access-to-critical-support.html.

The article talks about mental effects of isolation caused by COVID-19. According to

Auger (2020), the isolation increases when it is compounded with the stigma of substance use

or mental health issues. According to this article, First Nations Health Authority’s (FNHA)

launched a virtual substance use and psychiatry service to respond to this combined crisis.

Patients connect with the team of psychiatrists and addictions specialists via zoom or phone

and are ensured culturally safe encounters.

I fully support the content of this article. The article exposes everyone in the country

on ways in which they can access psychiatrist services during this period of quarantine.

COVID-19 has affected everyone and with the increase in substance use among citizens, it

can be harmful to both direct and indirect victims. The article is relevant since it is published

at the time when everyone is dealing with emotional stress caused by the pandemic.

Therefore, it is beneficial to most people since it forms a journey for their healing process.

Pottie, K. (2020, Nov 03). How empathy can go a long way to helping fix long-term care.

Ottawa Citizens. Retrieved from https://ottawacitizen.com/opinion/pottie-how-

empathy-can-go-a-long-way-to-helping-fix-long-term-care.

The article discusses the current situation in long-term care facilities in Canada, which

includes strict rules that have restricted visitation rights, even in the final hours of life due to

COVID-19 outbreak. In an experience explained by the writer’s grandmother, Babe, the

elderly woman loved her doctor for taking time to sit on her bed. The author explains that
6

medical and nursing students at the University of Ottawa are bringing compassion and a fresh

set of eyes to seniors in long-term care. Therefore, getting compassionate caregivers at these

facilities helps to reduce loneliness and to chase away the COVID fog.

I like the idea of including empathy in service provision at various long-term care

facilities since it helps to reduce loneliness. It also helps to increase the lifespan of the

patients since they stay happy most of the time and can interact with other people despite the

strict measures on visitation. This article is beneficial to the community since it reduces the

stress caused by loneliness at various care facilities more so at this period of pandemic.

Canada, P. (2020, October 05). Government of Canada. Retrieved November 05, 2020, from

https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/publications/diseases-

conditions/cleaning-disinfecting-public-spaces.html.

This article provides guidance on appropriate ways to clean and disinfect the public

setting such as universities, schools, museums, public libraries, public transit, communal

residences and workplaces. The government of Canada makes some suggestion to the citizens

through the article. They include: to choose a product that clean and disinfects and to create a

cleaning and disinfecting procedure. These government directives helps the citizens to stay

safe during this period of COVID-19. With the need for the government of Canada and of all

nations to keep their citizens safe, this article comes at an appropriate time, which makes it

relevant. The cleaning and disinfection services explained in this article is helpful to the

individual people and the entire community of Canada. The effects of COVID-19 are

adverse, which makes it necessary to follow measures that can help to prevent its infection.

anxiety.

Images (2020) states that currently, over 328.2 million Americans are going through

the same election and countless other Canadians who are feeling the reverberation of it. The

election results creates a lot of tension to the individuals and the society at large. The article

suggests individuals to have a support network such as loved ones and group chats to enable

peace of mind during this period. It also suggests people to nourish themselves and to stay

active to fight the tension created by the election results. This article is important since

different people have different levels of stress. Therefore, by following the suggestions from

this article, they can borrow one or two ideas that can help calm them down during this time

of uncertainties. With some areas expecting riots due to the uncertain results, this article can

be relevant to avoid such occurrences by having emotional impact on individuals and the

society at large.
