Kilo Shoe Company

Question 1

Yes, Kilo’s actions are unethical. Utilitarianism theory explains that ethical actions should

minimize people’s suffering while maximizing their happiness (Häyry, 2021). The decision by

Kilo Shoe Company to purchase clothes from a company that exploits children is like indirectly

supporting Crystal, LTD. Exploiting children and subjecting them to harsh conditions brings

suffering and not happiness. Therefore, the actions are unethical.

Question 2

Kilo's decision to terminate its business with Crystal is essential from an ethical perspective.

However, the motive behind this decision is more important. According to Virtue Ethics, the

morals of an individual and their character are more important (Slote, 2020). The motive for

terminating the contract should be that the company saw it as the right thing to do other than

doing it to protect its reputation. Therefore, the motive of the termination is more important as it

will help protect the exploited children by not supporting the business done by Crystal.
