HANDHELD MOTOR-OPERATED POWER EQUIPMENT GUIDELINES

Handheld motor-operated power equipment (Power tools) is equipment that is actuated by an additional
power source (usually electric) other than the solely manual labors used with hand tools. Power
tools present hazards such as noise, vibration, fire, electrical, moving parts, and projectiles. To prevent
hazards associated with the use of power tools, the workers should observe the following general
precautions:

 HANDLING AND USE OF POWER TOOLS

o Use the right tool for the job.


o Select tools with a proper Handle that can be gripped easily.
o All portable power tools shall be equipped with Dead Man Switch
(spring-loaded switch), which will actuate only when pressed. The
switch shall be free from any locking. Failure to install and use the
Dead Man Switch wont be tolerated and a strict action will be
taken against the violators.
o Ensure that the power tool has the correct guard or other safety attachment.
o Do not use tools with damaged Electrical cord.
o Examine each tool for damage before use and do not use damaged tools.
o Damaged tools shall be disconnected and tagged “Do Not Use.”
o After use, please switch off the power tools and unplug them from the power source.
o Never pull the cord to disconnect it from the power source.
o Never carry a power tool by its cord.
o Keep tools in a dry, safe location when they are not being used.
o Operate tools according to the manufacturers’ instructions.
o Do not use tools if you are not trained on how to operate safely.

 GRINDING MACHINES
o Check grinding wheels for cracks before use.
o Do not use cracked or damaged grinding wheels.
o The grinding wheel’s safe working speed (RPM) must be the same or greater than the
machine RPM.

 INSPECTION & MAINTENANCE

o Regularly inspect tools to make sure they are in good shape and fit for use.
o Power tools shall have a periodic inspection every three months by a qualified, competent
person to ensure it is working properly.
o The inspected tools should be labeled with an Inspection tag having proper
color coding.

o Disconnect tools when not using them, before servicing and cleaning them, and when
changing accessories such as discs and wheels.

 POWER SUPPLY

o Connect electrical tools to a safe electrical socket.


o Avoid octopus connections. Use a power distribution board that has
integral overcurrent protection.
o All portable electrical tools shall be properly grounded.
o The electrical cord used in the power tool should have double insulation. All electrical wires
shall also be inspected regularly to find out any damage in the insulated cover.

 WORKPLACE

o Keep the work area free of combustible material and use Fire Extinguishers, Fire Blankets,
and Fire Watchers to control fire hazards.
o Keep the work area free of debris that could cause a slip, trip, or fall. Long Cords to be laid
safely to avoid damage and tripping hazards.
o Keep cords safe away from water, heat, oil, and sharp edges.
o Provide barricades with safety signs and keep all people not involved with the work safely
from the work area.

 PPEs

o Use double eye protection with dark safety goggles and a face shield over it.
o Use leather aprons, hand gloves, sleeves.
o Use proper hearing protection (Earplugs / Earmuffs) when exposed to noise above 85 dBA.
o Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry.
