I. TITLE:

“Mental Well-being Support During and After COVID-19 for Learners

of Soldiers Hills IV Elementary School: Basis for Intervention”

II. INTRODUCTION AND RATIONALE

A. LITERATURE REVIEW

According to the World Health Organizations, due to the spread

of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), children across the world are
affected by physical distancing, quarantines, and nationwide institution
closures. They may be feeling more isolated, anxious, bored, and
uncertain. They feel fear, and grief, over the impact of the virus on their
families (WHO, 2020). The pandemic itself has caused so much worry
and stress. These stressors can affect anyone's mental health,
particularly children. With schools, as an ideal place to provide mental
health services to children, being closed, typical indicators educators
may use to identify learners experiencing mental health difficulties may
not be available.

B. RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1. What are the impacts of lockdown to mental health and wellbeing

young learners?
2. How teachers can use existing processes in schools to identify
learners who may need extra support—especially regarding anxiety
and depression caused by the pandemic?
3. What measures can be proposed to support the mental wellbeing of
the learners amidst pandemic?

C. SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The study aimed to investigate the 100 respondents of Soldiers

Hills IV Elementary School who need mental health support for school
year 2021-2022. Random sampling will be used in getting the number
of respondents. First, for the quantitative stage, a survey questionnaire
will be answered by all the respondents. Then, for the qualitative stage,
only selected participants consist of 20 learners will take part in the
interviews and focused group discussions through online and offline
channels like Zoom app, Google Meet, video calls or phone calls.

III. METHODOLOGY

A. RESEARCH DESIGN

The study used mixed – method of Explanatory Sequential

Design (Plano Clark, 2011) wherein quantitative data collection and
analysis is followed by the qualitative data collection, that will
substantiate the result of the initial quantitative data. The sense of this
research design is to give a general picture of the research problem;
more investigation, particularly through qualitative data collection is
required to refine, amplify or clarify the general picture.

B. SAMPLING

A total of 100 respondents consist of 3rd grade learners of

Soldiers Hills IV Elementary School will participate for the quantitative
phase that will be administered through survey questionnaires.
Convenience sampling will be used in choosing respondents of the
study. From the 100 respondents, the researcher will pick 20 out of
those results that were in need of mental health support. The
researcher will ask help from the advisers in choosing the learner-
respondents and will ask for information like name and contact details
so parents will be informed that a survey will be conducted through
their children.

C. DATA COLLECTION

The first survey consisted of 10 questions with 4-point Likert

scale response. The aim was to conduct a survey to 100 3 rd grade
learners of Soldiers Hills IV Elementary School through online channels
like Zoom, Messenger, and Google Meet. The researcher will seek the
consent to conduct the study from the Office of the Schools Division
Superintendent. After approval, indorsement letters will be given to the
elementary school with letter of permission to conduct the study. After
securing authorization, assent letters will be given to the adviser and
guardians of the learners for their intentional support within the
consideration, showing the reason for the study and securing the
privacy of the outcome.

D. DATA ANALYSIS

To come up with necessary interventions on keeping the mental

health of our learners sound, both quantitative and qualitative data will
be analyzed:

 For the quantitative data analysis, results of the survey

questionnaire will be interpreted using the frequency,
percentage, weighted means through data analysis tool in MS
Excel.

 For the qualitative data analysis, the meaningful statements of

the participants in the interviews and will be transliterated and
encoded using the MS word. To answer the research questions,
the researcher will gather and analyze significant amount of
data, as qualitative research demands (Yin, 2003). Process of
inductive analysis will be conducted. Patterns, themes, and
categories of analysis will emerge from the data (Patton, 2002).
Individual interviews will be transcribed, and documentation will
be reviewed. The phase of data analysis is the most difficult,
complex but creative.

E. ETHICAL ISSUES
The interviewees will be provided with a consent requesting for
their voluntary participation. Once obtained, the interviewees will be
informed with the objective of the study and the purpose of their
participation and ensure that their response and identity will not be
revealed by any means (Data Privacy Act of 2012). They can also
refuse to take part of the survey if they wish to.
