Introduction

In the modern era, social media's pervasive influence has significantly transformed
many aspects of human life, including education. Social media platforms have evolved into
essential communication tools, shaping how people connect, share information, and interact
with the world around them. Education, among the many sectors affected, has seen
significant changes as a result of the rise of social media. Social media can have an addicting
impact that may lead to poor health, poor concentration in class, poor time management and
consequently poor academic performance. As students increasingly engage with online
platforms, it becomes imperative to understand the implications of such engagement on their
academic performance.

This research aims to quantify the role of social media on education by analyzing the
correlation between social media usage and its effects on Grade 9 students. Social Media
which includes Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok are online platforms directed by policies and
regulations and guidelines. Additionally, individuals use these online applications in order to
satisfy their needs and goals.

Technology becomes more and more important to children, teens, and adults for
information, knowledge as well as amusement. Therefore, it can be verified that Social Media
has brought a change in the education department. Reading materials are improved due to the
internet revolution, a variety of media, such as webpages, e-books, electronic journals,
electronic papers, emails, chat rooms, and other publications in many languages. Nowadays,
anyone can search for information on any social media application to collect data and
discover new websites, obtain the most latest news, and download thrilling materials
(Obaidullah, 2018).

Moreover, students use their mobile devices to access the internet to carry out learning
related activities like reading. As social media, smartphones, and cutting-edge technology
applications become more and more necessary, these pupils eventually lose interest in
learning from standard textbooks and curriculum.
Furthermore, these mobile apps have become increasingly important in daily life,
including education. According to (Hasnain, 2015). With the development of technology and
the ever-increasing use of the internet, social media has become a part of our daily lives.
Social Media can help students and the younger generation to gain knowledge and improve
their academic performance if they use it positively.

These mobile apps have improved our quality of life and given us yet another creative
means of getting access to knowledge. In recent years, social media has become an
increasingly prevalent aspect of modern society, permeating various aspects of our lives,
including education.

The Students are increasingly exposed to social media platforms, it is important to

understand the potential impact of this digital technology on their educational experiences
and outcomes. Social media platforms offer a multitude of opportunities for communication,
information sharing, and engagement with a diverse range of content.

These platforms have the potential to shape how students access and process
information, interact with their peers, and participate in educational activities. However, the
extent to which social media influences education and its effects on students' academic
performance, learning outcomes, and overall educational experience are still relatively
unexplored.

By undergoing a quantitative analysis, this research seeks to uncover the relationship

between social media and education. Specifically, it aims to examine the correlation between
social media usage and various educational indicators among Grade 9 students. These
indicators may include academic performance measures, such as grades or test scores,
engagement levels in class activities, information-seeking behavior, critical thinking skills, or
overall satisfaction with the educational process.

Therefore, this study can provide insights into the opportunities and challenges presented
by social media in educational contexts. To sum up, this research aims to contribute in
developing strategies and interventions that maximize the benefits of social media while
mitigating any potential negative effects on students educational journeys.
Statement of the problem:

The integration of social media into the educational landscape is becoming more
common, raising concerns about its impact on students' academic performance and overall
educational experience. In the context of Kaylaway National High School, it is necessary to
quantify the role of social media in education and investigate the relationship between social
media use and the academic performance of selected students. This research seeks to address
the following issues:

The Impact of Social Media on Academic Performance:

To what extent does Kaylaway National High School students' use of social media correlate
with their academic performance?

Time Allocation and Social Media Engagement:

How much time do Grade 9 students spend on social media, and how does it affect their study
habits, focus, and time management?

Content Consumption and Educational Relevance:

What types of content do students encounter on social media platforms, and how does the
relevance of this content to their educational goals influence their academic performance?

Hypothesis

This hypothesis suggests that there may be a relationship between the level of social
media usage by the Grade 9 students and their academic performance. To test this hypothesis,
you would need to collect data on the students' social media usage, such as the time spent on
social media platforms, the types of activities engaged in, and the frequency of usage.
Additionally, the researchers would need to gather academic performance data, such as
grades or test scores.
By analyzing the data, you can determine if there is a negative correlation between
social media usage and academic performance. If there is a negative correlation, it would
suggest that lower levels of social media usage may be associated with better academic
performance. However, it's important to note that correlation does not imply causation, and
there may be other factors influencing academic performance.
Conceptual Framework

Figure one shows the research paradigm of the study. The researchers used the
input-process-output(IPO)model.

Figure 1.0 Research Paradigm

Figure 1 shows the conceptual framework of the study. The input of framework is
about how often the Grade 9 students spend their time on social media along with their
academic performances. The process of framework is about gathering the data that is needed
to form an
analysis, the analysis that would be performed is a quantitative analysis in order for us to
draw a conclusion. The researches will conduct these tasks using the questionnaire or survey
in order to measure the social media usage of the Grade 9 students and their academic
performances.

Scope And Limitations Of The Study:

This research aims to focus on the negative effects of social media usage on education
by analysing the relationship between social media usage and the academic performance of
Grade 9 students at Kaylaway National High school. This study will involve selecting the
Grade 9 students in Kaylaway National High school as the sample population, this will
ensure that the study captures the entire unit of students that are familiar in the specified
educational context. The researchers will provide data collection methods such as surveys or
questionnaires designed to gather information on the students’ social media habits and their
academic performance. Regarding social media usage, it may indicate the types of platforms
used, frequency usage and the time spent on these online platforms. And for the academic
data collection, we may base it from their experiences, graded test sheets and other indicators
that show their academic achievements. However, we excluded other grade levels below 9
from answering the survey in Kaylaway National High School, as it would have possibly
hindered the researchers from measuring the results due to the limited time we had in
conducting this study.

Significance Of The Study

The significance of studying the role of social media on education, particularly focusing
on a selected students at Kaylaway National High School, lies in several key aspects:

Understanding Impact: By quantifying the relationship between social media usage and
academic achievement, researchers can learn about how social media affects students'
learning outcomes. This understanding can help educators, policymakers, and parents
comprehend the possible benefits and pitfalls of social media use in educational contexts.
Informing Educational Practices: The findings of this study can be used to develop strategies
for leveraging the good qualities of social media for educational objectives. Educators can
adjust their teaching methods to effectively include social media platforms into the learning
process, increasing student engagement and knowledge retention.

Identifying Challenges: Investigating the relationship between social media and education
can reveal potential difficulties or risks connected with excessive or inappropriate social
media use. Understanding these problems enables educators and parents to create appropriate
interventions and support systems to reduce the negative effects on students' academic
performance and well-being.

Policy Decisions: Research findings can inform educational policy about the use of social
media in classrooms. Policymakers can create guidelines or laws to encourage responsible
and productive social media use among kids while also ensuring their academic performance
and personal growth.

Overall, studying the relationship between social media use and academic performance
among Kaylaway National High School students adds to our understanding of how
technology influences education and informs efforts to improve the integration of social
media into the classroom.
