CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The use of social media applications has become a widespread

phenomenon among all age groups. The incursion of information and communication
technology into human environment has brought about rapid interaction of humans
with their environment. Invension and use of internet came with many search
engines create to assist a man in searching for information often times this is called
"surfing the net". A lot of users have easy interaction with one to another in virtually.
The global world has been turned into an information hamlet where interaction and
information across the globe.

According to Adomi and Ejirefe (2012) define social media networking as

activities, practice and behavior among communities of people who share
information, knowledge and opinion online using interaction media. Social networks
are currently being used regularly by millions of people; therefore, the 21st century
has been described as a century of technological advancement. This is due to fact
that it is the century which is credited to making the world a global village. The
convergence of the media has expanded the usage of internet that gave birth to
social media. Social media, a concept that has given people a common platform for
sharing their news, views and opinions regarding the happenings around them. Not
only this, social media is also being used by the advertisers and companies for their
promotions, professionals for searching and recruiting, students for internships.
Because of its ease of use, speed and reach, social media is fast changing the
public discourse in society and setting trends and agenda in topics that range from
the environment and politics to technology and the entertainment industry (Asur and
Huberman, 2010). Modern Technology in communication no doubt has turned the
entire world into a “Global village”. But as it is, technology like two sides of a coin,
bring with it both negative and positive sides It helps people to be better informed,
enlightened, and keeping abreast with world. Social networking sites (SNSs) are
online Communities of Internet users who want to communicate with other
users about areas of mutual interest, whether from a personal, business or
academic perspective‖ (William ,Boyd, Densten, Chin, Diamond & Morgenthaler
2009). The study of Brady and Smith (2010), titled as "The Use of Alternative Use of
Social Networking Sites in Higher Education Settings: A Case Study of E-learning
Benefits of Ning in Education", was based on the educational benefits associated
with the use of Social Networking Sites. The study focused the graduate students
enrolled in distance education courses using Ning in Education, a non-commercial,
educational-based SNS. The study emphasized on the students' attitudes towards
the sites as productive online tools for teaching and learning. The researchers found
out that education based upon social networking sites can be used effectively in
distance education courses. They are an excellent technological tool for improved
online communications among students in higher distance education courses.

The focus of the study conducted by (Amin, Mansoor, Hussain and Hashmat,
2016) was to determine the effect of growing use of social media sites on the
academic performance of the students of universities and colleges. On the basis of
random sampling a sample of 300 students was selected. Questionnaire was used
as an instrument for data collection.97% questionnaire received back from
respondents on which descriptive statistics apply for data analysis. Results indicate
that the effect of social media can be positive as in this study closely determined the
real effect of social media sites. In recent time it encourages the carrier and future of
students' The social media sites like Facebook, twitter, Google+ And Skype capture
the attention of students for study and affecting positively their academic Grade
points.

Academic excellence or achievement plays an important role in an individual

placement, be it in the academic institutions or job placement. Due to this, many
people are concerned with the ways they can enhance their academic achievement.
Study habits are the tendency of students to study when the opportunities are given.
In the era of globalization and technological revolution, education is considered as a
first step for every human activity. It plays a vital role in the development of human
capital and is linked with an individual well – being and opportunities for better living.
It ensures the acquisition of knowledge and skills that enable individuals to increase
in their productivity and improve in their quality of life. Success as the name implies
is wished for by everybody but it does not easily come by on a mere platter of gold;
one must work for it through hard work and diligence. Learning is a very important
personal matter and there isn’t one study habit that works for every situation. An
individual student has to take more responsibility to acquire the desired knowledge to
develop positive values Success as the name implies is wished for by everybody but
it does not easily come by, critical thinking, attitudes and skills.

Effective study skills and strategies are opportunities to approach learning

tasks systematically and independently. Practicing good study habits is the key to
becoming smarter and achieving success in school. Study habits are said to be
improving because of the advents and wide use of the Internet, hypertext, and
multimedia resources which greatly affect the study habits (Liu, 2005). Karin and
Hassan (2006) also noted that the exponential growth digital information, which
changes the way students perceive studying and with printed materials that are to be
used in facilitating study. Liu (2005) and Ramirez (2003) report that students print
material from the Internet in order to study and read later on. Igun (2005) also found
that Nigerians study from materials downloaded from the Internet Individuals are
really different; thousands would love to study at night before going to bed while
thousand others will love to study at dawn. Late night is normally quite and an
individual is unlikely to be disturbed by anyone. Besides, a person has longer hours
to review all his notes and works unlike the dawn when an individual will have to race
against time. A thorough review at night will help a person learn while the studying
at the dawn is highly prone to forgetting. This is true for a particular group of people.
This is entirely against the theory of ‘Early to bed and early to rise makes a man
healthy, wealthy and wise. The study entitled "Influence of Students' Engagement
with Social Networks on their Study Habits and Cognitive Skills in Science
Classrooms" by (Oginni, Saibu, Awobodu and Alaka.2016) examined the influence of
students' engagement with social networks on their study habits and cognitive skills
in science classrooms in secondary schools in Education District VI, Lagos State,
Nigeria using a survey questionnaire to collect information from a sample of one
hundred (100) senior secondary school students. Chi square using Statistical
Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) at 0.05 significance alpha level was adopted
to analyze the stated hypotheses. The study findings revealed that the use of social
networks have significant impact on students' attitudes, their study habits and
cognitive skills in science classrooms. The study recommended that students should
be enlightened on the benefits and limitations of using social networks for both
academic and leisure. The most recent study conducted by (Khan & Ullah, 2021)
sought to examine the impact of social media on the study habits of students of
Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri. The research design involved
survey technique where questionnaires were used to collect data from a sample of
the student population. Statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) was used to
analyse the data. Spearman's Rho was the specific tool used for analysis. It was
presented in frequency tables and bar charts. Findings from variables investigated
showed that at p<0.5, social media usage had a significant impact on the study
habits of students of Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri. This
indicated the need for stakeholders in the community to employ counselling and
other proactive measures to ensure that students maintained proper focus on their
primary assignment for schooling.

The emphasis on academic excellence which is also prevalent worldwide has

encouraged many studies about the conditions promoting it. Academic performance
is acomplex process that is influenced by several factors, such as study habits.
Study habit Is different individual behavior in relation to studying and is a
combination of study method and skill. In other words, study habits include behaviors
and skills that can increase motivation and convert the study into an effective
process with high returns, which ultimately increases the learning. This skill is also
defined as any activity that facilitates the process of learning about a topic, solving
the problems or memorizing part or all of the presented materials Study habits are in
fact the gateway to success and differ from person to person.

According to previous studies, good study habits include studying in a quite

place, studying daily, turning off devices that interfere with study (such as TV and
mobile phones), taking notes of important content, having regular rests and breaks,
listening to soft music, studying based on own learning style, and prioritizing the
difficult contents. Some of the worst study habits include procrastination, evading the
study, studying in inappropriate conditions, and loud sound of music and television
during studying. Study habits are the most important predictor of academic
performance and global research has revealed that study habits affect academic
performance. In this regard, medical students are faced with a large amount of
information that is difficult to organize and learn, and requires knowledge and
application of study skills.

Statement of The Problem

This study aims to determine the relationship of social media and the study
habits of the students in Manay National High School. The research seeks answer
the following questions:

1.What are the advantages and advantages and disadvantages of using social
media?

2.What is the level of the study habits of the students?

3. Is there significant difference between the social media and the study habits of the

students when analyzed in terms of gender?

4. Is there significant relationship between the social media and study habits of the

students?
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study only focused on the impact of social media on study habits of

students in Manay National High School. The study covered the respondents who

are enrolled in Manay National High School. The study does not involved solving the

problem but rather to assessed the impact of social media on the study habits of

students. The research is limited to the respondents age range of 17-20 years old

and did not include younger than 17 years old and involving 27 respondents.

HYPOTHESIS

1. There is no significant difference between the social media to the students

study habits.
2. There is no significant relationship between social media and study habits of
the students.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

SOCIAL MEDIA STUDY HABITS

STUDENTS
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Findings of this research may help the students/parents to understand more

about the impact of social media to the academic performance.

1. Students- they can understand about the positive and negative effects of
social
media that affects their study.
2. Parents- the parents who will read this research will obviously know if the
social
media really help their children to the academic performance that
affect
study habits.
DEFINITION OF TERMS

The important terms is this study are conceptually and operationally defined for easy
understanding.

Social media - it is a platform that most of the people around the world use it to
connect
to their friends, family and also for work.

Students-a student is a person who goes to school to learn something. Students can
be children, teenager, or adults who are going to school, but it may alsobe
other people who are learning, such as in college. Study habits can be
described as effective depending upon whether or not they serve the
students well.
CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents a review of literature and studies. It includes

information and ideas from books, articles and past researchers that supports the
investigation.
The internet has become a powerful force that connects billions of people across the
world. It is comprised of various different networks, including private and public,
academic, business and government networks with varying scope ranging from local
to global connections through electronic means such as wireless networks and
optical systems.

This incredible advancement in media technology over recent years has had
an immense impact on our lives. Not only does it allow us access to vast amounts of
information at our fingertips but it also helps bridge cultural differences allowing for
greater collaboration between nations beyond what was previously thought possible.
Through introducing more efficient communication avenues like social networking
sites, internet banking platforms and other web-based services we are able to work
smarter instead of harder making tasks easier than ever before. In essence, being
connected via the internet is quickly becoming expected rather than seen as just
another tech convenience option – giving rise to many opportunities where success
can be achieved regardless one’s geographic location or nationality significant
impact on the rapid growth of the internet.
The use of high-speed broadband networks has enabled users to access
large files, stream audio and video content, browse websites quickly and engage in
real-time interactions with friends and family members all over the world. Advanced
technologies like network virtualization, cloud computing and distributed systems are
also changing how businesses operate across different industries by allowing them
to scale their services faster while reducing costs at an unprecedented rate. As more
people come online each day, so too do new possibilities that will continue to
revolutionize our lives.
Khan (2012) conducted a study to investigate the impact of social networking
websites on students. To do this, they created a research questionnaire that
examined five variables: age, gender, education level, social influence and academic
performance. The results revealed that individuals aged 15-25 were more likely to
use these types of sites than any other demographic group. Additionally, it was found
that higher levels of social influence and lower levels of academic performance had
significant correlations with increased usage.
Raut and Patil’s (2016) research highlighted the various positive and
negative impacts of social media on education or students. They proposed measures
to minimize the potential harms, such as moderating access to sites like Facebook
and Twitter, cutting down the amount of time spent online on these platforms, etc., in
order to improve academic performance among learners. The five most popular
social networking sites are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and LinkedIn.
These platforms allow users to communicate with each other by sharing updates on
events in their lives or opinions on certain topics. They also provide features such as
messaging services and photo-sharing capabilities that make it easier for individuals
to stay connected with friends and family members from afar. However, if these
networks are used excessively or inappropriately they can be dangerous for an
individual’s mental health due to the potential of cyberbullying or comparison anxiety
when scrolling through posts about people seemingly having more perfect lives than
your own. Additionally, some of these networks can have a negative effect on
productivity levels since users may become too preoccupied checking up on them
throughout the day instead of focusing on work tasks at hand. Facebook and Twitter
are two of the most popular social networking websites today. Facebook allows
users to share photos, videos, messages, chat with friends and family, create groups
or pages for businesses or events, and much more (Sales 2010).

The other studies high resource students are more likely to use technology for
more experimental and creative uses than students from low resource schools. This
finding does not contradict the anticipated finding of study that access to technology
has no influence on the uptake of Social Networking Sites since the respondents of
this study are anticipated to have equally free access to the internet.
The focus of the study conducted by (Amin, Mansoor, Hussain and Hashmat,
2016) was to determine the effect of growing use of social media sites on the
academic performance of the students of universities and colleges. On the basis of
random sampling a sample of 300 students was selected. Questionnaire was used

that the effect of social media can be positive as in this study closely determined the
real effect of social media sites. In recent time it encourages the carrier and future of
students' The social media sites like Facebook, twitter, Google+ And Skype capture
the attention of students for study and affecting positively their academic Grade
points.

On Twitter, users can post tweets about their thoughts or interests as well as
follow celebrities and other personalities in order to stay up-to-date on trending
topics (Dorsey 2009). Both platforms offer a wide range of features that make them
appealing for different types of people. Tumblr and Bing are two different social
networking sites that offer users a variety of features. On Tumblr, users can blog
pictures, information and easily share content with other people. With Bing, users
have the ability to search for all sorts of data on the internet such as videos, images
and documents which can be downloaded directly from their site.

Both platforms provide an interactive way for individuals to connect with each
other in various ways depending on their needs or interests. Now, high school
students have access to a wealth of information on social media platforms and the
web in general that can be used for educational purposes such as researching topics
for thesis papers or writing journal entries. However, it is important to remember that
misusing these resources could deprive them of learning opportunities and lead to
negative consequences.

San Miguel (2009) conducted a study that examined the relationship

between time spent on Facebook and academic performance. The results of the
research suggested that students who spend more time on Facebook tend to have
slightly lower grades than those who do not, indicating a negative correlation
between these two variables. Further research is needed to better understand this
effect and its implications for student learning outcomes.

Enriquez (2010) found that students who multi-task between social

networking sites and homework are likely to have 20% lower grades than a student
who does not use Facebook, and whose average GPA is 3.5 - 4.0 compared to an
average Facebook user's GPA of 3.0 - 3.5 and study time of 1 – 5 hours per week as
opposed to 11– 15 for non-users. John believes that running a social networking site
in the background on a student's PC while they are studying or doing homework can
negatively affect their grades. He argues that having Facebook, emails, and instant
messaging constantly running in the background is distracting and makes it harder
for students to focus on their tasks.
Choney (2010) examined how the amount of time spent on Facebook could
affect study habits. The study found that users of Facebook had an average Grade
Point Average (GPA) of 3.06, whereas non-users had an average GPA of 3.82 –
indicating a substantially lower level of academic achievement amongst those who
utilized the platform regularly. The literature further suggests that study habits are a
predictive factor of academic performance.
Ebele and Olofu (2017) found out that there is a significant relationship
between study habits and students' academic performance. Looyeh, Fazelpour,
Masoule, Chehrzad and Leili (2017) investigated the relationship between the Study
habits and the Academic performance of Medical Sciences Students found out the
significant relationship between the study habits of students and their academic
performance. Similarly, Siahi and Maiyo (2015) studied study habits and academic
achievement of students also found out that a positive relationship.

According to Micaller (1987), students nowadays tend to disregard their

studies due to the lack of patience and commitment towards the lessons that
teachers taught them. In simpler terms, this study implies that students are in favor
of wasting their time and effort copying word-for-word in each and every assigns
given to them. The real problem behind the situation is that students, especially in
this generation with a world full of technology, finish their homework without
understanding the concepts as taught by their mentors or teachers. The solution to
this problem therefore, was to enhance the ability and skills of the students to be
able to fully understand the lessons that they read or wrote in their notes. Smith
(1991) expressed that the ideal system of education would not happen if students do
not develop their study habits, and methods in learning new skills and lessons
provided. This explains why home works were given high emphasis in improving a
student’s study habits.

A study from Duallo (1984) stated that among students today, effort is the
only solution in enhancing a student’s learning style and the ability to cope up with
hard-core information and lessons provided by the teachers. The only problem that
the students currently have is that they lack the ability to take studies seriously.
Students are also nowadays preoccupied with present frivolities away from
unmindful of what lies ahead. Being an excellent student is hard to attain, you need
to study hard and show that you are good in anything especially in your academics.
Moreover, as stated by (Mayland Community College, 2002) when a student
performs well in school it means that they exercise good study habits and it reflects
their performance during examination and will result to a superior degree level. In
addition.
According to (Robinson, 2001) as cited in the study entitled “Influence of
study habit on students” (2013), the academic performance of the students is
expressed in the form of high scores in the result of their quizzes, seat works,
activities and assignments. The quizzes and given by the teachers or professors
are used to determine whether the student excel in the subject or not. This explains
why home works were given high emphasis in improving a student’s study habits. .
However according to Anderson(2009) described social media networks as the
networked tools that allow people to meet, interact artifacts and interest with each
other. However, a study conducted by Bowers-

Campbell (2008) stated that Social Networking Sites were used as a tool for
improving academic motivation among university students enrolled in a
developmental reading course. Specifically, Bowers-Campbell put forth the argument
that using Social Networking Sites may help students to better connect "with college
low self- efficacy and poor self-regulation behaviour plaguing many developmental
learning students". In order to address self-efficacy among students, "superlatives"
or "virtual gifts" were suggested as a type of reward system to recognize the
achievements of students in the course. It was also recommended that Social
Networking Sites can be used as a means to foster a sense of "connectedness"
between the instructor and students in order to further increase self-efficacy even
before the course started by having the students review the instructor's profile in an
effort to familiarize themselves with the instructor.

The other

Social media has become an integral part of students' lives. It is a platform that
connects students with their friends and peers, allows them to share ideas, thoughts,
and experiences. However, social media has also been linked with negative impacts
on students' academic performance. This literature review aims to explore the
relationship between social media and students' study habits.

Impact of Social Media on Students Study Habits: Several studies have

investigated the relationship between social media and students' study habits. A
study conducted by Kirschner and Karpinski (2010) found that social media use was
negatively correlated with academic performance. The study also found that students
who used social media while studying took longer to complete their assignments and
had lower levels of academic achievement.

Another study conducted by Junco (2012) found that students who spent more
time on Facebook had lower GPAs. The study also found that Facebook use was
negatively correlated with the amount of time students spent studying.

A study conducted by Malik and Hussain (2016) found that social media use
had a negative impact on students' academic performance. The study found that
social media use was positively correlated with procrastination, which in turn was
negatively correlated with academic achievement.

A study conducted by Wang, Chen, and Liang (2011) found that social media
use had a negative impact on students' concentration and attention span. The study
also found that students who used social media while studying had lower levels of
comprehension and retention of information. However, some studies have found that
social media use can have a positive impact on students' study habits. A study
conducted by Manca and Ranieri (2016) found that social media use can facilitate
collaborative learning and improve students' academic performance. In conclusion,
the literature suggests that social media use can have a negative impact on students'
study habits, including academic performance, concentration, and attention span.
However, some studies have found that social media use can also facilitate
collaborative learning and improve academic performance. It is important for
students to use social media responsibly and in moderation to avoid negative
impacts on their academic performance.

CHAPTER 4

This chapter deals and interpreted. In this presentation, we analyses the data
collected and provided and interpretation of the results. The study aimed to
determine how social media affect with the discussion of the relationship in the
chapter 1of this study. They are presented and analyze the study habits of the
students.

LEVEL OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA ON THE STUDY HABITS OF THE STUDENTS:

Shown in the table 1 and 2 are the data collected from the senior high School
students which is our respondents in the area of Purok Molina, Manay National High
School and also the means of the collected data. The estimated respondents in the
area of Manay National High School is 107 students since it so much for us to
provide 107 questionnaire so we devide it to 4 and the results is 27.The total of our
respondents now is 27.
