CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Social involvement and interaction have changed in the digital age.
An essential medium for social engagement is social media. Given that
student success in higher education depends on peer interaction, modern
teaching techniques have been modified to incorporate social media
(Thalluri & Penman, 2015). Students in Indonesia are quite familiar with
social media since it is utilized for social, professional, and educational
purposes in addition to serving as a communication tool. A lot of people
have embraced the use of social media in the learning process in emerging
and developing nations. Numerous experts have conducted extensive
studies to determine how students utilize technology, especially social
media. Students may use social media to improve their knowledge of
everything, including how to speak English and to aid them in their
studies.
People no longer exclusively communicate face-to-face in the
current world. There are many different methods to communicate. There
are several online communication tools available, including Facebook,
Instagram, WhatsApp, Line, Twitter, etc. Social media is an online
platform where people may engage and communicate via a networked
internet connection (Mayfield, 2008). Social media communication is easy
and incredibly entertaining. people can communicate with numerous
people at once via social media. Social media may assist and make it
simple for people to engage in activities like information sharing,
conversation, work, learning, and more
Martínez-Alemán & Wartman (2008) stated that students have
been seen to spend more time and attention on social media. Additionally,
it is commonly accepted that using social media to provide education

improves teaching and learning by giving students access to interactive
information and better support services, such as tutoring and feedback.
Additionally, social media creates a different network where teachers and
students may communicate without using the traditional eye-to-eye
classroom setup. Social media platforms are used by students for a variety
of objectives, including information access, group discussions, resource
sharing, and entertainment.
Although social media is the big media for communication, the
researcher is still concerned with determining the willingness of the
students to communicate in English regarding improving the students’
English proficiency. This mini-research was conducted to determine the
primary reasons for the willingness of students to communicate in English
on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
