REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

It is scripted by an investigator who views the significant points of recent in

information which contain outcomes, abstract and methodological addition to a specific topic.

Literature reviews are secondary resource as did not report any new or creative experimental
work.

Mostly literatures reviews are linked with academic oriented literature, consisting thesis

or fellow reviewed article, is mostly Takes a research proposal and results paragraph.

It is major objective to locate the recent study in the body of literature and to give references

as specific reader. It is combining of research in near every educational area.

On a research question, calculations, select and analyse all high quality research

suggestion related to the question. Analysis is a systematically can be used for statistical

method, which efficiency link the information used on all chosen studies to develop effective

academics.

Social media is the interaction among individuals in which they create, share information

and ideas in communities and also in networks. Social media rely on cell phone and internet-

based technologies for developing connected platforms which help people and group to create,

share out, and convert generated content.

Student is a scholar, of person connects to educational complex, in our Pakistan twelve-

year school is fall in category of 3 stages: primary level, secondary level and higher level

school. It contains 5 years of a student to graduate through Primary level, 3 years for

secondary level and 2 years for higher level school. Bachelor’s degree is of 4 years and after

those 2 years of Master’s degree. Basically this study is about how social Media networks

affect the performance of student that how their grade points affected through using such

networks. Some mots commonly used media s are Facebook, Skype, twitter, you tube, Google.

In deferent countries a large number of researchers have been work on this issue to evaluate

the increasing used among students. Most of the studies presented the results in against Social

Media and argued that it has negative results for student and younger generation. According to
this study social media has emerging positive effect on the students and causes for their high

results grade. These studies also argued that students spent most of their time on such

activities and easily completed their home assignments and projects.

Student having age group of 23 were notice to like more to use text messaging and web

calling instant messaging by a significant margin. An annual survey of ECAR made a

collection of data and chooses undergraduate of 100 universities and colleges in USA.

According to their statistics usage of social networking in not much changed for young

student. In a survey of 2007, in older students there is dramatic increase of social networking.

As in 2007, up to 90.1 % of students having age group of 18 to 24 year-olds used sites of

social networking and in 2010, this ratio had increased by three points only. As compare to age

group of 25-29 year-olds’ students, increase in social networking among students. It can be to

increase communication skills and thinking among them.

According to Domini (2013) a seminar is conducted in graduate student in which they

were total to use twitter and weekly post tweets in order to extent discussions of classroom

after that students used twitter account to connect with their content and with other students.

In Addition, Students having remarks about twitter is that” twitter is useful personally and

professionally “

According to Junco, Herbergent, and Lokence al (2011) a study is conducted on 132

students in order to examine the relationship of social media and engagement of student with

is & social media and grades of students. To examine these relationship students were divided

in to two groups, one group user twitter and the other group did not use twitter account. It was

used to make discussion about study material, is organize the study groups in a manner, also
post the announcements of class, and remain in touch with class fellows.

Junco and his on workers (2011) surprised that the students of twitter group achieve greater

GPSs and higher access than the other group.

According to J.S al (2011) examine by online installing questionnaires to respondents

than he person having smart phones are the most frequent user of social networking site and

have easy access to this sites, more over it showed that junior and senior student are more

interesting to use twitter, Linkedla and read blogs, twitter and Linkedla and younger are

frequent user of Facebook for their deferent activities while used of such media have no

negative effect on student’s grades.

According to Shamabare, R al (2012) conduct a study on social networking habits

among students their study indicates that such Medias most commonly used by younger’s and

Facebook in most widely using by a large member of communities and have multiple effects

on student’s life. The high speed and quickly approach to internet and the development of

smart phone technology are most important drivers behind the adoption and connectivity with

social networking websites and conclude that SNS enhance their knowledge level

According to Ahmad A. (2011) their study show that networking sites have number of

advantages for their user, it enables the community to keep in touch with their peers relink

with old ones and help to finds new friends according to your interest from all around the end

a large member of persons are linking with this network Hence the network of social media is
growing globally.

According to Heeter, (2006) a study at University of Michigan State give information

about technology use in higher education, particularly in relation to faculty. This survey

interprets teaching and learning habits for staff member online, students that are graduate and

undergraduate are also included. About 65 % of faculty and students both real blogs beat here

faculty for personal information was more likely read them students post for both educational

and personal proposes. Faculty used online photo sharing program more than student such as

flicker, but about 50% of both group used it. Students need Facebook 70% while faculty used

less than 10% of either Facebook or My Space. Student used text more likely.

According to Lenhart (2009), for online user most popular in social networking a group

age of 25 years’ students and that ratio decrease for each succeeding group 10% or for adults is

less over 55, in November 2011. A paper in release which that 66% of” adults” used deferent

type of social media which is MySpace, Facebook and percent are Twitter.

According to Kim al (2009) roles of international students are support through internet

and social network sites, specially, for particular international student which are using their

internet for building new relationship, also for study, and the other students using the internet

in their host country. To develop new relationships with student they also utilized technologies

from their entertainer country. Rather than focus on build and maintain relationship, primary

goal of students ‘was to meet academic needs this research’s major focus on using Internet as a

whole.

According to Lia al (2011) focusing on a study conducted primarily on the Facebook

outcomes, which are un entry international students in the USA. The researchers found that

Facebook usage contributed to student’s ability to participate socially and culturally in their

new environment. It is founded in a survey that out of the international students, 46% of

students point out a social media site.

De Andreart al (2002) it is founded in the social support is expanded try social

networking. New students are allowed to adjust in successful academic study.

According to Junco al (2011) it is founded that when Facebook Groups allow the

student to do political or public engagement, rather than using social networking with sites for

social contribution, students are using these sites for public involvement. This perception is

carry by Junco study, where it was originated that student’s use Facebook for catch other than

in socialize. Information collecting and Information sharing activities make up a time to spend

on Facebook as students. Students which are Facebook more for data sharing and collecting

activities get high grades than those who used it for socializing. This evidence suggests that

student use Facebook for study activities however it is positive or not.

REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES

Social networking sites are widely used by university students. This study investigated

the purposes for which social networking sites are used and their effects on learning, social

interaction, and sleep duration. A majority of the participants reported prolonged use of social

networking sites for nonacademic purposes. These habitual behaviors can distract students

from their academic work, adversely affect their academic performance, social interactions,

and sleep duration, and lead to a sedentary lifestyle and physical inactivity, which in turn can
render them vulnerable to non-communicable diseases and mental health problems.

Social networking sites and applications are widely used by students. They spend a lot

of their time on these sites as a part of their daily lives. Studies revealed that among the

various age groups of students, university students are among the most using social

networking (Azizi et al., 2019).

According to (Greenhow and Robelia, 2009).Social networking sites play a very

important role in education. Indeed, students are afforded multiple opportunities to improve

learning and access the latest information by connecting with learning groups and other

educational systems. Students can also exchange information by connecting with different

individuals. This can have a positive impact on student learning outcomes (Yu et al., 2010).

Social media also has an impact on student mental health; which refers to their

emotional, psychological, and social well-being. students spend a lot of their time on social

media both during the day and at night, and it can be contended that such technologies play an

important role in their daily lives. However, despite their tremendous contributions to

knowledge acquisition, there is a need to determine whether such technologies are being used

to gain knowledge or for other purposes that may lead to the harmful effects of technology

misuse.”

Social media has more adverse effects than positive ones (Woods and Scott, 2016).

Since students tend to spend more time on social media other than educational purposes; this

tends to cause distraction from the learning environment, affecting their academic progress
(Bekalu et al., 2019, Hettiarachchi, 2014). Further, spending a lot of time on social networking

sites can lead to a sedentary lifestyle and a decrease in daily physical activity levels, which in

turn can render them vulnerable to noncommunicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and

hypertension (Melkevik et al., 2015, Zou et al., 2019, Hu et al., 2001). Additionally, social

media use has negative effects on mental health and can lead to depression and anxiety.

Therefore, because of the growing numbers of such sites and high demand for social media

among university students, it is important to examine the purposes for which social

networking sites are used.

A majority of the students used social networking sites. Excessive social media use for

non-academic purpose distracted them from their learning and academic activities and delayed

their bed time, which in turn reduced their sleep duration. Further our study reported that,

excessive social media use decreases social face to face interaction. This has a negative impact

on social well-being and can lead to depression, anxiety, and mood swings. Additionally, late-

night social media use reported in the present study can lead to chronic sleep restriction, which

plays a significant role in the etiology of diseases associated with metabolic syndrome.

Modern lifestyle habits are incompatible with the intrinsic attributes that we inherit. Therefore,

interventions should educate individuals about healthier sleep-hygiene practices and help them

modify their maladaptive sleep habits. Furthermore, spending a lot of time on social media can

increase sitting durations and lower physical activity levels, which in turn can lead to a

sedentary lifestyle. This can increase one’s risk of developing metabolic syndrome and chronic

non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.

The internet is the key information and communication technology that led to a
worldwide revolutionary change in the information scenario (Siraj, et al., 2015). The internet

is a pool of knowledge and any country that fails to provide her youth access to the internet is

unseating the country from her throne of dignity among other dignitaries (Olatokun, 2008). It

is developed to serve as a platform for various activities for all age groups in society (Akin-

Adaeamola, 2014). The internet is a technology that has become an enormous part of people’s

daily lives. Through its ability to act as a support medium in different functions for which

people use it, the internet was introduced to academic institutions as a tool to enhance

student’s academic experience in the mid-1990s (Ngoumandjoka, 2012). Over the last

decades, internet connectivity has improved tremendously and is available everywhere such as

homes, offices, travels and schools (Ellore et al., 2014). Today, empirical studies (e.g

Adedotun, 2015; Akende & Bamise, 2017) report that access to information can influence the

academic performance of students. The use of credible internet resources is of greater

importance for academic study, especially in high class courses which require an academic

review of literature (Sahin et al., 2010). Internet use for educational purpose is found by Kim

(2011) to be the heart of adolescent academic achievement. The availability of internet is

almost everywhere, most students have had access to internet on their cellphones (Ellore et al.

2014). This helps students to broaden their academic knowledge, research andassignments by

accessing information worldwide and also enhances easy communication to the academic

community (Siraj, et al., 2015).
