❖Theoretical concepts

2
Objectives
❖To demonstrate the working principles of a concentric tube heat
exchanger operating under parallel flow conditions.

❖To demonstrate the working principles of a concentric tube heat

exchanger operating under counter flow conditions.

❖In both of above objectives, specifically, you are supposed to calculate

❖Heat added to cold fluid
❖Heat removed from hot fluid
❖Overall heat transfer coefficient
❖Log mean temperature difference
3
Classification of HE (Geometry of construction)
❖Most popular way of classifying heat exchangers, major
construction types are
❑Tubular heat exchangers
❑Plate heat exchangers
❑Extended surface heat exchangers
❖Tubular heat exchangers: These are built of circular
tubes with one fluid flowing inside while other flows outside
tubes. These are further classified as
❑Double pipe heat exchangers
❑Shell and tube heat exchangers
❑Spiral tube heat exchangers

5
Tubular (Double Pipe Heat Exchanger)
❖ A typical double pipe heat exchanger consists of one pipe placed
concentrically inside another of large diameter with appropriate
fittings to direct the flow from one section to the next.
❖ Double pipe heat exchangers can be arranged in various parallel and
series arrangements to meet the pressure drop and flow rate
requirements.
❖ Usually used for sensible heat exchange requirements.
❖ Commonly used for heat transfer area requirement up to 50-100 m2.
❖ If heat transfer coefficient is poor in annulus, axially finned inner tube
can be used.

Flow types and temperature profile

Range: Difference in the inlet and outlet temp of one fluid e. g. T H, out - TH, in

Approach: Difference in temp of both fluids at one end of exchanger e.g. T H, in - TC, in
10
Heat added or removed
❖ Sensible heat Q= m cp ΔT= ρ V cp (ΔT)

❖ Latent heat Q= m λ (while λ is latent heat of phase change)

❖ Here in this experiment, sensible heat is involved

11
Log mean temperature difference (LMTD)
❖ Calculation of LMTD

❖ Calculation of U using 𝑄 = 𝑈𝐴 𝛥𝑇𝑚

❑Q is amount of heat transferred

❑U is overall heat transfer coefficient

❑𝛥𝑇𝑚 is log mean temperature difference
