Final examination for 4th year Mechanical Engineering students (2014/2015GC)

Hydraulics and Pneumatics (MEng4195) Time allowed 3hrs
Maximum Mark 50% Instructor: Murugan P

Instructions:
 Calculator, and rulers are allowed during exam
 Your answer should be clear and specific, only the neat sketch should be marked
 If necessary assume the suitable value wherever not given.
 Attempt all the questions

1. Explain the function of hydraulic circuit shown in fig. below, emphasizing how the
system will keep vertically mounted cylinder in upward position while the pump is
idling. --(5 marks)

2. A double acting cylinder is hooked up to reciprocate. The relief valve setting is 70

bars. The piston area is 0.016 m2 and the rod area is 0.0045 m2. If the pump flow is
0.0013m3 / s, find the cylinder speed and load- carrying capacity for the
a. Extending stroke
b. Retracting stroke. (5 marks)

3. What is the purpose of regenerative circuit? Sketch the circuit diagram of regenerative
cylinder in the application of drilling machine using a four way valve having a spring
centered design with a closed tank port and pressure port open to outlet port A and B
and explain how the regenerative circuit is different from the regular double acting
hydraulic cylinder? (5 marks)

4. (i) Briefly explain any two type of accumulators. (5 marks)

(ii) Explain the working of four-way three position control valve.(5 marks)

5. (i) Explain with a circuit how in shaping operation a fast approach, slow feed, and
rapid return can be achieved. (5 marks)
(ii) Explain with a circuit how punching operation can be achieved (5 marks)

6. Design a hydraulic circuit for the following sequences A+B+A-B- where A & B
stand for cylinder (+) indicates extension and (-) indicates retraction of
cylinders.(7 marks)
7. Design a cascade circuit for a drilling machine to discuss the following functions
(i) cylinder A is used to clamp the work piece, (ii) B is used for drilling the work
piece and (iii) C is used to remove the work piece from the station. (8 marks)
