Instructions
Use your group number to determine the load and lifting height. For example, for group 2, peer
group 1 use carrying capacity = (300+ 2 *100) Kg and lifting height = (1+ 2 *0.5) m.
Determine the dimensions of the main components of the system based on the given
carrying capacity and lifting height. (15%)
Prepare a 3D model of the parts and assemble them to have a complete hoisting equipment
using CATIA software package. (15%)
Cheek for equivalent stress and maximum deformation /deflection using structural analysis
on CATIA. (10%)
Peer Group 1
Design of Single Acting Hydraulic Crane
This crane uses a hydraulic system to lift a heavy loads applying only small force. The main
components of the equipment are boom, pillar, single actuating cylinder and pumps. One end of
boom is pinned with the pillar and the hydraulic cylinder is connected the two main parts. Hook is
connected with the other end of the boom. When the pump supply working fluid to the cylinder,
then the actuator will extend this time the boom will raised with the attached load.
Specifications
Carrying capacity= (300 + Group number *100) kg
Lifting height = (1 + Group number*0.5) m
Peer Group 2
Design of Portable Gantry Crane
This is a special kind of overhead crane that used to lift a larger load compere to the jib crane. The
main components of the equipment are pillars with rollers, bridge (I beam) welded chain and a
simple trolley. It is drive by human power using endless welded chain. Trolley contains gears,
sprockets and rollers. The chain enables to lift or lower the load while the bridge is a main
component on which the trolley moves along to transfer the load horizontally.
Specifications
Carrying capacity= (900 + 100*Group number) kg
Lifting height = (2 + 1*Group number) m
Peer Group 4
Design of Bridge Crane or Overhead Crane
It is a type of crane where the hook-and-line mechanism runs along a horizontal beam that itself
runs along two widely separated rails. Often it is in a long factory building and runs along rails
along the building's two long walls. It is similar to a gantry crane. Overhead cranes typically consist
of either a single beam or a double beam construction. These can be built using typical steel beams
or a more complex box girder type. Pictured on the right is a single bridge box girder crane with
the hoist and system operated with a control pendant. The advantage of the box girder type
configuration results in a system that has a lower deadweight yet a stronger overall system
integrity. Also included would be a hoist to lift the items, the bridge, which spans the area covered
by the crane, and a trolley to move along the bridge
Specifications
Carrying capacity= (3000 + 100*Group number) kg
Lifting height = (1 + 1.5*Group number) m
