TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION
HOLIDAY ASSIGNMENT – MAY 2021-2022
GRADE – IX
“Technology in Education”

Dear Parents

We hope you and your family are safe and in good health!

Over the last one year, the world has changed in many ways and education was one of the first to be
impacted. Just when we hoped that things would get better this year and we would get back to normal,
we were hit by yet another wave of the pandemic. Our thoughts and prayers go out to our fellow
citizens, and we pray to the Almighty to give them the strength to overcome these diffcult times. It is
time to also express our gratitude to the covid warriors and frontline staff-doctors,nurses, medical
workers, military and police personnel, who are constantly battling it out there, taking risks to ensure
that everyone stays safe.

Our children are also going through a completely new experience, a very tough one – something, we
as parents never faced in our lifetime. They have been stuck indoors for over a year, with the school
being transformed into a small little monitor where they meet everyone in the virtual realm. They
have little access to their friends and cannot play out in the open, freely. Though they may never
express it, it is one of the most difficult phases in their life. They are tired and exhausted dealing with
these times. MWS family would like to thank the parents for their fullest cooperation and support in
understanding the new paradigm and enabling their children to effectively adapt to the new world,
while keeping them safe, healthy and engaged.

We also take this opportunity to express our gratitude to teachers across the world, including our own
academic and administration team at Mahindra World School, for their dedication. We have tried our
best to adapt to the new normal and effectively engage the students, so that they do not miss the
school and academics. In order to channelise the energy of our young minds and help them spend their
time more constructively during the vacations, we once again seek your support and request you to
spend quality time with your children.

Holiday assignment is the best way to engage our budding champions and keep them connected with
academics. It is equally important to kindle their imagination and foster an outlook that will help them
explore, discover and rediscover. During the holidays, let our children relish some home-made sweets
and savouries, admire nature from the confines of their home, reminisce the wonderful time spent at
their native, recall their adventurous trips in hills and jungles and finally thank Mother Earth for all
the love she has showered upon them.
Team MWS has come up with simple, meaningful and engaging holiday assignment themes, specially
crafted for each grade level, ranging from the evolution of the earth to the future of technology and
mankind.
In order to complete these assignments, we request you to follow these guidelines.
 Help your child to prepare a daily routine to complete the assignments.
 Use the resources available at home. It is not a race for perfection but a journey of learning
and discovery.
 Encourage your child to adhere to the guidelines given by the teachers and complete the
assignments independently using his/her own imagination and creativity, taking guidance
from you only when necessary.
 Always give them a big hug, when they show you, their efforts. It will go a long way in
boosting their self-esteem.

Stay safe and stay healthy

Wish you all a fun-filled and happy vacation ahead!

Earthquakes, volcanic activity, tsunamis, floods, cyclones, landslides, avalanches and

droughts are natural disasters and man has no control over them. They are a result of natural
activities and hence known as natural disasters.

Man Made Disasters:

The man-made disasters are triggered by human beings. Some of the man-made disasters are:
bomb explosions, terrorism, war or civil war, leakage of poisonous chemicals, breach in
dams, air or water pollution, industrial accidents and epidemics. They are known as manmade
disasters because they occur due to human actions and not natural forces.

Technical based learning process help to develop skills and understandings. And it can
motivate and excite about learning.
Let’s explore Irrationality using technical skill.
Activity:
Make a working model to represent Irrationality on number line using the following
description.

Objective:
To represent some irrational numbers on the number line.
Materials required:
Two cuboidal cardboard, thread, board pin, two photocopies of a scale, a screw with nut, glue.
Method of construction:
1. Make a straight slit on the top of one of the cardboard strips. Fix another cardboard strip
on the slit perpendicular to the former strip with a screw at the bottom so that it can
move freely along the slit [see Fig.1].
2. Paste one photocopy of the scale on each of these two strips as shown in Fig. 1.
3. Fix board pins at a distance of 1 unit each, starting from 0, on both the strips as
shown in the figure.
4. Tie a thread at the board pin at 0 on the horizontal strip.

Demonstration:
1. Take 1 unit on the horizontal scale and fix the perpendicular cardboard strip at 1 by the
screw at the bottom.
2. Tie the other end of the thread to unit ‘1’ on the perpendicular strip.
3. Remove the thread from unit ‘1’ on the perpendicular strip and place it on
the horizontal strip to represent on the horizontal strip [see Fig. 1].
Similarly, to represent , fix the perpendicular wooden strip at and
repeat the process as above. To represent , a > 1, fix the perpendicular
scale at and proceed as above to get .

YOGA/P.E.:

We all need regular exercise in order to maintain good health. Practicing Yoga on a daily
basis will help us to work on our flexibility and strength. Workouts by stretching our muscles
can help us move better and feel less stiff or tired.
Assignment: The following are asanas which you should practice every day.
Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation is a sequence of 12 powerful yoga poses, besides being a
great cardiovascular workout.
Surya Namaskar is also known to have an immensely positive impact on the body and mind.

Surya Namaskar is best done early morning on an empty stomach. Each round of Sun
Salutation consists of two sets, and each set is composed of 12 yoga poses.

Benefits of Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation):

 Helps maintain cardiovascular health

 Stimulates the nervous system
 Helps in stretching, flexing and toning the muscles
 An excellent exercise for weight loss management
 Strengthens the immune system
 Enhances cognitive functions
 Improves overall health, strengthens the body and relaxes the mind
The Twelve Postures:

1. Pranamasana (Salutation posture)

Stand erect with feet together. Join the palms together in front of the chest.
Concentrate on standing straight and steady in a prayerful attitude.
This posture helps to induce a state of introversion, relaxation and calmness.
It activates the anahata chakra. Exhale fully.

2. Hastauttanasana (Raised arm posture)

While inhaling, stretch both arms above the head, palms facing upward.
Arch the back and stretch the whole body. This posture stretches the
chest and the abdomen and lifts the Prana (energy) upward to the upper parts
of the body propelled by inhalation.
3. Padahastasana (Hand to foot posture)
While exhaling, bend the body forward and down, keeping the spine straight.
Avoid collapsing the chest or "over-rounding" the upper back.
Keep the legs straight and perpendicular to the ground.
The knees may be allowed to bend a little if needed.
This posture massages the abdominal organs, especially the liver, kidneys, pancreas,
adrenals, uterus and ovaries.
The power of digestion increases. Blood flow is smooth to the spinal nerves as
they are stretched and toned.
The hamstring muscles at the back of the thigh and calf muscles are stretched and toned.
Inversion increases blood flow to the brain.
The Prana is channelled to the lower regions of the body propelled by exhalation.
4. Ashwa Sanchalanasana (Equestrian posture)

On your next inhalation, extend the left leg back and drop the knee to
the ground. The right knee is bent and kept between the hands and
the right foot placed flat on the ground. Concentrate between the eyebrows.

5. Parvatasana (Mountain posture)

Upon exhalation, bring the right leg back to join with the left leg.
Simultaneously raise the buttocks and lower the head between the arms,
so that the body forms a triangle with the floor. Try to place the heels flat on the ground.
Focus on the neck area. This posture strengthens the nerves and muscles in the arms and legs,
stretches the calf muscles and Achilles' tendons and makes the spine straight and taut.It
relieves varicose veins and tones spinal nerves. Maintaining the posture, take a deep breath.

6. Ashtanga Namaskara (Salutation with eight limbs)

Exhaling gently drop both knees to the ground and slowly slide the body down
at an angle as you bring the chest and chin to the ground. All eight
parts of the body - toes, knees, chest, hands and chin - touch
the floor. The buttocks are kept up. Hold the breath. This posture
develops the chest muscles and strengthens arms. It sends additional
blood to this area helping to rejuvenate the nerves.
7. Bhujangasana (Cobra posture)

On the change to upon inhalation, lower the hips while pushing the chest
forward and upward with the hands, until the spine is fully arched and the
head is facing up.The knees and lower abdomen remain above
the floor. Focus the awareness at the base of spine and feel the tension
from the forward pull. This pose gives dynamic expansion to the organs
of the chest and abdomen, relieving many ailments such as asthma,
constipation, indigestion, kidney and liver problems. It is very helpful in relieving tension in
the back muscles and spinal nerves.
8. Parvatasana (Mountain posture)

Exhale and get back to posture 5.

9. Ashwa Sanchalanasana (Equestrian posture)

Inhale and swing the right leg forward between the hands. The left leg remains
back. Resume posture 4.

10. Padahastasana (Hand to foot posture)

Exhaling, bring the left foot forward. Join both legs and resume posture 3.

11. Hastauttanasana (Raised arm posture)

Inhale, raise the trunk up and bend backward. Resume posture 2.

12. Pranamasana (Salutation posture)

Straighten the body and bring the hands in front of the chest.
Resume posture 1.

Note:

The above constitutes one half of a round of Surya namaskara. To complete the other half, the
same movements are repeated except that the right leg is brought back in posture 4 and the
left foot is brought forward in posture 9. So one full round consists of the exercises done
twice. Practice up to 4 rounds in the morning and 4 rounds in the evening.
When the exercises are done a little quickly, the gain is more physical. While if they are done
slowly with breath awareness, the gain is more mental and spiritual.
If for any reason, the above directions seem confusing, it is best to see the Surya Namaskar in
visual flow. It will help you do the practice correctly without the risk of doing harm to your
body.

Precautions:

Patients of Hernia and high blood pressure are warned against this practice.
People suffering from back conditions should seek proper advice before commencing Surya
Namaskar.
Pranayama:

The word pranayama is a compound of two separate Sanskrit terms, prana and yama.
The Atharvaveda, (one of the earliest Vedic texts on Indian medicine) states that prana is
“the fundamental basis of whatever is, was, and will be.” Other texts often translate prana, as
the “life force” or “vital energy”. The complementary term yama is often translated as
“restraint” or “control”.

❖ Steps Involved:

1. Sit in a comfortable cross-legged position like Easy Pose (Sukhasana), or lie on your back
in Corpse Pose (Savasana).
2. Rest one hand on your belly and one hand on your rib cage.
3. Close your eyes, and breathe deeply but naturally.
4. Begin to focus your awareness on the breath as it moves in and out of your body.
5. Feel the lift of your belly and the expansion of your ribs on your inhalations; and the slight
compression of your ribs and drop of your belly as you exhale.
6. Next, bring your hand to your chest, just below your collarbone. Breathe all the
way into this area and allow your chest to rise slightly; then exhale and let it go.
7. Feel your belly lift, ribs expand, and chest lift as you inhale; on your exhalations, notice
how your chest drops, ribs contract and belly lowers.
8. Release your arms and focus your mind on your breath, inhaling and exhaling fully.
Benefits:
• Reduces hypertension and digestive system function and boosts the immune system
• Aids with healthy eating habits and weight loss

• Strengthens the respiratory system.

Precaution:

1. Pranayama should not be practiced in a hurry.

2. Do pranayama outdoors or in a well-ventilated room
3. Do not practice pranayama if you are too tired, relax for 10-15 minutes in Savasana
before doing pranayama.
4. If you feel tired or experience discomfort, stop doing pranayama, lie down in
Savasana while carrying out normal breathing.
5. Beginners should not hold breath.
6. Pranayama should not be practiced immediately after meals.
You can do pranayama at least three hours after meals.
