ARTS 1013: Art Appreciation

LEARNING TASK # 2 (30 points)

ART CRITIQUE
Part 1: Insert a picture or a painting here of your choice. Don’t forget to include the source. (4 points)

Source: https://www.pinterest.ph/pin/17873729741282378/

Look at the artwork carefully then answer each of the following questions in 1-3 complete sentences.

1. What do you think the artwork is about? (4 points)

The artwork transpires genuine happiness of these young, wild, and free kids as they don’t mind
if they will get sick as long as they are happy. This photo reminds me of my great and
unforgettable childhood days. It was fun, not until today, where it is hard to stay outside, talking
to others and enjoying life in the outside world. Life at present seems so sad as kids depends
their happiness on gadgets unlike before where kids are like birds who were free to enjoy life.

2. What subject type is reflected by the artwork? Why? (4 points)

They artwork portrays a representational art as we can see kids, freely and happily enjoying life
under the rain. On the first glance, we can already identify the subjects of the image, unlike non-
representational art which are hard to figure out what is the main subject of the artwork. It is a
representational artwork as we can easily recognized what it contains.

3. What type of beauty the artwork would most probably fall under? Why? (4 points)

The type of beauty of this artwork is intellectual beauty because we need to have deep thinking
and understanding to figure out what it is trying to speak. The meaning of this artwork lies
beyond what we see, it is on our intellect. Yes, the image portrays kids playing under the rain,
however, it speaks happiness. The genuine happiness that the kids felt as they ran and play with
their friends to enjoy life.

4. Identify what way of representing the subject was used in the artwork? (4 points)

The artwork is a dash of realism as the kids, who were the subject, are seen in the image. But as
we think deeper, it is really on symbolism as the kids we saw on the image symbolizes genuine
happiness that was accumulated during their playtime under the rain. Also, the rain symbolizes
blessing to the kids. Let us admit that not all these kids are lucky to have a lot of money, but on
the other hand, they are blessed with true friends, happy life, and unforgettable memories that
they will carry until their last breath.

Part 2: Answer the following questions based on the image above. 10 points

1. How does the artwork make you feel? (5points)

The situation we have today is quite different from what we have before. Upon seeing this
picture on the internet, it made me feel happy as I remember how the good old days were. We
are free to play outside, run on the streets even if the sun is brightly shining or the rain is heavily
pouring. I’m happy as I have these memories which I can carry throughout my life, however, I’m
quite unhappy because life today seems so boring due to the fact that we can’t experience the
happiness of those kids in the picture. People are just at home, sitting in front of their computers.
Kids can’t experience how it is exciting to play outside and go home with dirty clothes and
bodies. Today, they are just at home, watching videos and playing online games on their
gadgets. They call it life, but I call it cage. We are the prisoner of this COVID-19 pandemic.

2. If you could change or to put on the artwork’s title, what would you call it? Why? (5points)

If I would put a title on this image, I will call it “WHEN?”. Why? It is simply because I want people
to realize the difference between today and before. When will be the time that these kids of
today will be as happy as those kids in the image? When will we experience the freedom of
staying outside; hanging out with our friends? When is the time that everything will be okay?
There are lot of questions in my mind and I hope I can find the answers of it earlier than what we
think. Our situation today was so difficult; it is stressful. I hope these coming months our life will
be better.
