This dialog is for questions 1 to 3

Nadya : I heard you and your family spent your holiday
in Malaysia.
Revan : We did. We visited many places there.
Nadya : May I see your photographs!
Revan : Those are pictures of Murals in Georgetown,
Penang. You know, Georgetown is home to
street art. Along the street we’ll be amazed by
many amazing murals.

but murals often motivate viewers to engage in
positive things.

object, an artist can explore subjects and then
create fantastic visual representations beautifully
and meaningfully.

Optical art has become one of people’s favorites due
to its unique shapes. Optical art, or up art in short, uses
optical illusions in its visual art. Patterns, shapes, and
colors of drawings create images that seem to move or
blur. It’s something confusing, but if we look at it more
closely, we’ll see and feel new sensations. Here are a few
reasons why enjoying optical art is advantageous.
First, optical art is fun and interesting. It is a great
source of relaxation and recreation. While enjoying
optical illusions, we may feel new sensations or
experiences through the images.
Then, optical art helps sharp our brains. It leads us to
think about how a certain thing is possible. When we
enjoy optical art, we do not only ‘see’ a drawing but also ‘
look at ‘ a drawing, meaning that we observe something
comprehensively. We try to seek its meaning, and such an
activity intensifies our thinking process.
Finally, optical art helps us stimulate the right side of
our brain. It improves our problem solving skills, visual
recalls, and spatial reasoning abilities.
So, why don’t you try to enjoy optical art? Get the
new sensation and sharpen your brain.

Music has undeniably been an important aspect of

our life. It has a significant role in our daily activities.
That’s why we can find music in any place and at any
time. There are several reasons why music is everywhere.
First of all, music is a way to express what we feel.
For instance, when we fall in love, we tend to listen to
love songs. Another example is when we feel sad, we
would listen to melancholy music, and sometimes we
purposefully immerse ourselves in our emotions. It also
happens when we are happy. We tend to choose cheerful
songs.
Secondly, music helps us to reminisce about past
experiences. A person’s favorite song could act as a
documentary for that person. Moreover, people with
impaired brain function, like Alzheimer’s, would
remember the details of songs they are familiar with. For
instance, an elderly woman who couldn’t even remember
her husband’s name would remember the detailed of how
her favorite song influenced her feelings. When she
listened to the music, she would associate it with the
emotion that came along with the music which made the
song memorable for her.
Finally, music can motivate people to make
significant changes in the world and make it a better place.
A song with powerful lyrics could move people to do
something about the problem implied in the song. For
example, we can see it in Michael Jackson’s “Heal the
World”. The lyrics empower the people of the world.
Therefore, we cannot separate music from our life
since music is part of our life.

In today’s society, I strongly believe that television

has no educational value for children. Television makes
them lazy, wastes time, and can also promote aggressive
behavior.
In my opinion, too much television watching leads to
children becoming lazy, both physically and mentally.
Rather than becoming involved in a range of leisure
activities such as bike riding or ball sports, children
instead remain at home peering at a television screen.
Many people believe that they need to participate in more
physical activities which, consequently, will increase
their cardiovascular fitness and improve their
coordination. Watching television does not promote
either of these things.
It is not educational as it usually does not encourage
children to think at all. Therefore, children need to
decrease their television watching time, as it is not of any
educational value. Although television is entertaining, it
is not educational because it encourages people to waste
time. Children often prefer to watch television when they
come home from school. Doing this stops them from
doing their homework, which stops them from thinking.
Often, they want to stay up late and watch something on
television. This can lead to them going to bed late, which
in turn can lead to lethargy at school. For this reason, it is
difficult to state that television is educational.
Another important reason to support the view that it
is not educational is the fact that increased television
watching can result in aggressive behavior. Many shows
depict popular characters as angry, violent, and
aggressive. These attribute are not ideal for children to
see as they often transfer what they see on television into
their own life. Many children have also learned coarse
words from the television. This type of learning is not
positive and creates a society full of actions and language
that promote aggression. I believe that television has no
educational value and that fewer children watch it the
better.
To summarize, I concur with the view that television
is not educational as it makes children lazy, waste time,
and promote aggressive behavior.

12. Watching is not educational because ….

a. It leads children to play outside more.
b. It increases too many cardiovascular activities
c. It doesn’t encourage people to think
d. It improves the sense of coordination
e. It manages children’s time well
13.“Many children have also learned coarse words from
television.” The underlined word can be changed
into…
a. Violent

In accordance with the development of digital
technology, beauty filters have become interesting
features. They give people opportunities to make
something or someone look more beautiful on
screen. It’s fun and pleasing, but it brings negative
effects on one’s personality. Some people say that
social media providers shouldn’t offer beauty filter
applications due to several reasons.
The first and foremost reason in that beauty filter
may cause negative impacts on our mental health.
A study from International Journal of Eating
Disorder has stated that those who edit their photos
before sharing them on social media usually have
body image or eating issues. They are never
confident with their body images. In this case, they
have low self – esteem and it’s not good for their
personality. For serious matters, such a condition
will enhance body dysmorphia disorder, a mental
illness related to obsessive – compulsive disorder.
People with body dysmorphia disorder will hate
parts of their bodies that look improper. Besides,
looking at filtered pictures of ourselves for too long
can be damaging. When we’re addicted to using
beauty filters for our posts on social media, we’ll
see nothing but flaws when we see ourselves
without filters. Our perception of what is real
changes. We’ll stay in camouflage and cheat many
people.
Based on the reason above, it’s true that we had
better avoid beauty filters when taking pictures.

Many people, especially women, from different
cultures have used henna for centuries. It’s made from
grinding dried henna leaves that are processed into a
paste. It’s naturally brown or orange – brown. Temporary
henna tattoos are chosen to create beautiful artwork on
the skin on special occasions, such as wedding
celebrations. However, we should be aware of the use of
temporary henna tattoos with black henna ink. Why is
that so?
The food and drug administration says that many
people have bad reactions after using temporary henna
tattoos with black henna ink. Henna tattoos by
themselves are not the problem. The problem arises when
other components are added to make the henna darker or
react faster. P – phenylenediamine ( PPD) is a common
allergen found in black henna ink. The substance may
cause serious allergic reactions, such as redness, blisters,
raised red weeping lesions, increased sensitivity to
sunlight, and permanent scarring. By law, PPD is
forbidden for cosmetics that will be applied to our skin.
To sum up, we should thinkwell before using
temporary henna tattoos. We should make sure that the
ink used is safe for our skin. Avoid using black henna ink
for the tattoos. If the henna mixture smells like
chemicals, never use it. Then, if we get an allergic
reaction when having a henna tattoo, we should
immediately see a healthcare professional.

It is great that digital art has come about, but it is
only another medium that humans have developed.
Digital art will be used by millions of artists from now
on, but it will never completely replace traditional art.
Firstly, when new mediums are discovered, old ones
remain. Think of all the fantastic art created by our artsy-
crafty ancestor. For thousands of years, humans have
been creating art. The earliest artworks were paintings on
cave walls (The Original Gangsta of traditional media).
Fast forward a few millennia and we had Tom painting in
Ancient Egypt, The Byzantine mosaics of Europe, and
then came the paintings, sculptures, and sketches created
by Da Vinci, Donatello, Botticelli, Michaelangelo, and
Raphael. More recently there was cubism and modern art
in the 1900s. These were Gauguin, Pablo Picasso,
Salvador Dali, and Andy Warhol.
Then, traditional art is historically too important to
replace. Traditional artworks have been celebrated for
centuries and, up until this very ay, have been exhibited
in museums for hundreds of years. People don’t go to
Ikea to marvel at their best selling paintings. People go to
art galleries and museums.
Finally, the art collectors’ market will never lose
interest in traditional art. The prices of some artworks
have gotten a tad out of hand. In 2017, one of Jean-
Michel Basquiat’s paintings, ”Untitled”, sold for $ 110.5
million. The most expensive artwork ever sold was
Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvatore Mundi”, which was sold
for $ 450 million. The art collectors’ market is showing
no signs of slowing down. Meanwhile, digital art hasn’t
reached this level of value.
Traditional art has a long and rich history. Museums
and galleries all over the world are filled with paintings.
And people with way too much money keep buying up da
Vincis and Basquiats for squillions of dollars.

e. Traditional art.

a. It is cheap
b. It has a high value of art
c. It is easy to make
d. It can be perceived easily
e. It is expensive
27. “People don’t go to Ikea to marvel at their best
selling painting.” What does the underlined word
mean?
a. Supermarket
b. Museum
c. Clothing store
d. Art galleries
e. Furniture store

Thousands of macaques are bred or captured from the
wild to be used as street performers, or known as “
topeng monyet”. The macaques are used to perform street
shows; wearing funny masks, riding bicycles,
performing acrobatic moves, and doing amusing things.
However, such shows should be banned for few reasons.
First, topeng monyet is a kind of exploitation of
monkeys for money. The monkeys are hung from chains
for long periods to train them to walk on their hind legs
like humans. Their teeth are extracted so they can’t bite
and they are tortured to remain obedient. The monkeys
are often outfitted in dresses and cowboy hats and forced
to carry parasols or ride tiny bikes. This animal abuse
will definitely hurt the monkeys.
Second, the ban on masked monkey shows can help
improve public order. Topeng monyet is often performed
when traffic is backed up at notoriously congested
intersections. This will disturb the sight and create traffic
jams for many motorists or pedestrians who will slow
down to watch the shows.
Third, banning dancing monkeys is a necessary
public health measure. It is important to rescue the
monkeys from street performances and help prevent
diseases carried by the monkeys.
The monkeys used in topeng monyet may not be
healthy and may have potential to some diseases such as
tuberculosis and hepatitis.
Considering the reasons stated above, topeng monyet
should be banned for it exploits the monkeys, causes
traffic jams, and spreads illnesses as a tuberculosis and
hepatitis.
