Assignment 2.

1: Plate Tectonics Worksheet

Define tectonic plate:

The tectonics plate is a section of the crust of the eart that the continent rst on.
There’re 9 major plates:

1) North Amercan
2) Pacific
3) Eurasian
4) African
5) Indo-australian
6) Australian
7) Indian
8) South America
9) Antartic

Describe the theory of plate tectonics:

The tectonic theory says that the plate of the earth are moving, they are moving
towards and away from each other.

Directions:

1. Create a name for each of the numbered plates. Feel free to be creative, using
a global and relief map of the world to find features that might be close to the
tectonic plate you are naming. Write each name in RED.

1) Victory

2) Liby

3) Anilaha

4) Arona

5) Yululegend

6) Angel

7) Nujuy

8) Faddy
2. Now draws arrows showing the direction each plate is slowly but surely
moving.

3. Search the textbook and the Internet for the actual name of each plate. Write
each name in BLUE.

Actual names for each plate :

1) Indo-australian
2) Pacific
3) North American
4) Nazca plate
5) Antartic plate
6) South America
7) African plate
8) Eurasian plate
4. Looking at the map of the continents, what can you see about the shape of
continents would lead scientists to believe the Earth’s surface might consist of
plates that slide around on the surface of the lithosphere?

If we look at the world map and we look at the tectonic map, we can see that
each continent its own tectonic plate.

5. Where do most earthquakes occur?

Most earthquakes occur around the “Ring of fire” and at the edge of the
continent.

6. What is the reason for this distribution?

The ring of fire sits between two or more tectonic plates and they crash and rub
against in each others, this create friction and volcanoes.

7. What other major physical structures are found along tectonic plate
boundaries?

There are earthquakes, volcanoes, and rifts which are very deep valleys, in the
surface of the earth.
