 Principles of quantitative research, quantitative
research designs, application of statistics for research in
music, data interpretation, trends in quantitative
research for new knowledge and public presentation;
principles of qualitative research, critical reading of
qualitative research, mixed methods research,
contemporary issues in music research, trends in
qualitative research
MSMS723 Course Objectives

 The main objectives of the course is to


provide a toolkit that allows students to
write their own doctoral research proposal
 By the end of the course students will be
able to access to relevant databases, read
research critically, describe and apply
principles of research designs and
methodologies, and deliver presentation of
their research proposal.

Doctoral Dissertation Topic

Performance and Pedagogy Major


 The topic should be related to music
pedagogy to complete the pedagogy aspect
of the major.
 Other topics can be selected, for example
playing technique, performance practice or
literature, so long that the topic is written in
a teaching context.

Doctoral Dissertation Topic

Composition and Theory Major


The Doctoral Dissertation in Composition and Theory
consists of two parts:
1) Original large-scale composition of at least 20 minutes of
music.
2) Analytical paper of 50 pages to accompany the
composition.
The paper should include a critical
 discussion of the piece, for example origin of ideas,
philosophy, musical analysis, expressive goals, or
 composition techniques, among others. Musical examples
and other supporting resources must be presented.
