MODULE 2020

LESSON 4

EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES

INTRODUCTION

The proliferation of information technology gives rise to the identification of various

kinds of emerging technologies in today’s world. These may include information technology,
wireless data connections, man machine communications, any kinds of customized printing, bio
technology or formation of robotic mechanisms.

It has transformed the entire working structure into a highly tech working environment
that we are into practice nowadays. The growing competition found today in every aspect of
working has led the way towards growth and efficient working to stay profitable and have ample
chances of survival. It is also necessary for governments and organizations to ensure
sustainable economic development and a healthy organizational environment for maximum
investments.

The different emerging technologies available are to be explored in this Lesson.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this module, the students are expected to:

- Identify the different emerging technologies that can be utilized in BPR

- Present any system available related to your work station
- Differentiate the used of these emerging technologies for the day-to-day
transaction

COURSE CONTENTS

Unit 1 – Emerging Technologies

In the presence of Information Communication Technology, people devices different

systems to make the work assignments easier and can be done just right in front of their
personal computer; the following are the breakthroughs that no one had ever imagine:

 Workflow-Document Management System. A workflow management system (WMS or

WfMS) is a software tool designed to help streamline routine business processes for
optimal efficiency. Workflow management systems involve creating a form to hold data
and automating a sequential path of tasks for the data to follow until it is fully processed.

 Imaging-Health Information System. is a networked software system for managing

medical imagery and associated data.

 Biometric Identification System. The introduction of BIS in the work system has at first
alienated workers of the different companies. This automated Fingerprints detector and
or by combining face, voice, and lip movement recognition, this identification system
yields highly accurate results. Because it includes a dynamic feature, it provides more
security than systems using only static features.

• Multimedia Technologies (Audio/Video/Virtual Reality). Multimedia can be defined as

any application that combines text with graphics, animation, audio, video, and/or virtual
reality. A computer system is a combination of equipment (hardware), processes and
programs (software), and people organized to perform a function. Combining these
definitions, a business multimedia system includes equipment, programs, and people
organized for the purposes of communication, data storage and retrieval systems
(multimedia databases and electronic filing systems), information security, and Internet
use (Web pages and electronic-business applications) (Encyclopedia).

• Global Information System/Global Positioning System. As defined by Learnz.com,

Global Positioning Systems or GPS are used to find the exact location of things.
Geographic Information Systems or GIS are used to record information on to maps. Both
GPS and GIS are useful in managing land in the high country.

• Interactive Voice Response System. is a technology that allows a computer to interact

with humans through the use of voice and DTMF tones input via a keypad. ... IVR
systems can be used for mobile purchases, banking payments, services, retail orders,
utilities, travel information and weather conditions.

• EPS-Electronic Payment System An electronic payment system(EPS) is a way of

paying for goods or services electronically, instead of using cash or a check. Electronic
payments as referring to online transaction on the internet, there are actually many
forms of electronic payments.

• Mobile Banking. Mobile banking is a service provided by a bank or other financial

institution that allows its customers to conduct financial transactions remotely using a
mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet. Unlike the related internet banking it uses
software, usually called an app, provided by the financial institution for the purpose.
Mobile banking is usually available on a 24-hour basis. Some financial institutions have
restrictions on which accounts may be accessed through mobile banking, as well as a
limit on the amount that can be transacted. Mobile banking is dependent on the
availability of an internet or data connection to the mobile device.

• 3D Printing Technologies. 3D printing, or additive manufacturing, is the construction of

a three-dimensional object from a CAD model or a digital 3D model.[1] The term "3D
printing" can refer to a variety of processes in which material is joined or solidified under
computer control to create a three-dimensional object,[2] with material being added
together (such as liquid molecules or powder grains being fused together), typically layer
by layer.

• Social Media. are interactive computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation
or sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via virtual
communities and networks. The variety of stand-alone and built-in social media services
currently available introduces challenges of definition; however, there are some common
features:
1. Social media are interactive Web 2.0 Internet-based applications.
2. User-generated content such as text posts or comments, digital photos or videos,
and data generated through all online interactions, is the lifeblood of social
media.
3. Users create service-specific profiles and identities for the website or app that
are designed and maintained by the social media organization.
4. Social media facilitate the development of online social networks by connecting a
user's profile with those of other individuals or groups.

patterns, trends, and associations, especially relating to human behavior and
interactions.

• Virtualization Technologies relies on software to simulate hardware functionality and

create a virtual computer system. This enables IT organizations to run more than one
virtual system – and multiple operating systems and applications – on a single server.
The resulting benefits include economies of scale and greater efficiency.

• Cloud Technologies Cloud computing is the on-demand availability of computer system

resources, especially data storage (cloud storage) and computing power, without direct
active management by the user. The term is generally used to describe data
centers available to many users over the Internet. Large clouds, predominant today, often
have functions distributed over multiple locations from central servers. If the connection to
the user is relatively close, it may be designated an edge server.

• Wireless Technology-On-Line Electric Vehicles. is an electric vehicle that charges

wirelessly while moving using electromagnetic induction (the wireless transfer of power
through magnetic fields). It functions by using a segmented "recharging" road that
induces a current in "pick-up" modules on the vehicle.

Online electric vehicles are the first public transport system that uses a "recharging" road
and was first launched on March 9, 2010 by The Korea Advanced Institute of Science
and Technology (KAIST).
