Traditions of New Year’s Day around the world

How do you plan on celebrating New Year's Eve this year? Will you run around the neighborhood,
throwing old dishes against people’s front doors? If you live in Denmark, you might do just that. Or perhaps
you'll give red panties, as gifts for good luck and the promise of a fruitful new year if you are Turkish.
Traditions to welcome the New Year vary widely around the world, and the differences make the life so
colorful.

In Philippines, the start of the New Year is all about the money. The Philippian believe that the round
things will bring them money or fortune. Therefore, they eat round food, wear clothes with polka dots and
keep coins in their pockets.

In Naples, Italy, people toss everything even fridges off their balconies. For them, getting rid of old
furniture in their house symbolizes a fresh start in the New Year. To prevent serious injuries, most locals
stick to small and soft objects for their throwing tradition, though it’s still a good idea to watch your head if
you travel to Naples at that time.

In many rural areas of Belgium, there is a custom for farmers to wish their cattle a happy New Year. It
is said that this tradition will bring luck for the upcoming year. Meanwhile, children of Belgium write letters
and cards to their loved ones, which are read out on New Year’s Day.
