There is a custom in Italy for young people to get engaged on Valentine's Day. Some shops sell baskets and
cups which are filled with sweets and tied with ribbons. The young lovers offer these to each other as a sign of
their love. In Korea, on February 14th, young women give sweets to their boyfriends, and on March 14th  their
boyfriends buy them chocolate. However, the young people who do not have a girlfriend or boyfriend can
celebrate their own day on April 14th. On this special day, called "Black Day", these young people sit with
their friends, who are in the same situation, and eat jajang noodles, which are black. This ensures that
everyone has a day to celebrate. Most people in the United States take Valentine's Day as an opportunity to
express their feelings towards their loved one or to offer the hand of friendship to others. However, it is
popular on these days to send an "anti-Valentine" card. These cards either have an insulting message (to the

I. Reading comprehension: Read the passage carefully and choose the correct answer.
It seems obvious to us now that the 1st of January is the first day of the New Year. But for a long time,
there was no agreed calendar. It was not until about five hundred years ago that countries gradually adopted
the 1st of January as the New Year. As travel and trade around the world increased, it was helpful to have the
same dates for everything
Because of the division of the world into time zones, the New Year moves round the world as the new day
begins. The first time zone to see the New Year is just the west of the International Date Line. It is the Pacific
Ocean islands of Kiribati. The New Year arrives last in the island of Niue.
On the 31st December, people all over the world meet to wait for the clock to strike midnight. Then there
are spectacular firework displays to welcome in the New Year. Thousands of people gather outside in places
like Trafalgar Square in London and the Harbour Bridge in Sydney. Last year in New York’s Times Square,

lasts for five days. And Chinese New Year, which is the most important event in the Chinese calendar, is
around the end of the January. Everyone has new clothes, and there are parties, street decorations and
fireworks. The New Year celebrations last two weeks.

V. Reading comprehension: Read the passage carefully and choose the correct answer.
Since the world became industrialized, the number of animal species that have either become extinct or
have neared extinction has increased. Bengal tigers, for instance, which once roamed the jungles in vast
numbers, now number only about 2,300. By the year 2025, it is estimated that they will become extinct.
What is alarming about the case of the Bengal tiger is that this extinction will have been caused almost
entirely by poachers who, according to some sources, are not always interested in material gain but in
personal gratification. This is an example of the callousness that is contributing to the problem of extinction.
Animals such as the Bengal tiger, as well as other endangered species, are valuable parts of the world’s
ecosystem. International laws protecting these animals must be enacted to ensure their survival- and the
survival of our planet.
Countries around the world have begun to deal with the problem in various ways. Some countries, in an
effort to circumvent the problem, have allocated large amounts of land to animal reserves. They then charge
admission prices to help defray the costs of maintaining the parks, and they often must also depend on world
organizations for support. This money enables them to invest in equipment and patrols to protect the animals.
Another response to the increase in animal extinction is an international boycott of products made from
endangered species. This has had some effect, but by itself it will not prevent animals from being hunted and
killed.

The Chinese New Year takes place sometime between January 21 st and February 20th. Like most other
traditional Chinese festivals, its date depends on the Chinese lunar calendar, and changes from year to year.
In China, the New Year is very much seen as time of new beginnings. For this reason, people believe
that all debts should be paid and arguments resolved before the festivals even begin.
Houses are cleaned from top to bottom with particular attention being paid to the kitchen. People believe
that the kitchen gods send in a report to the “Higher Authorities” on the family’s behavior over the past year.
They want to encourage them to say nice things about them.
At this time of the year there are also thought to be a lot of evil spirits around, so people set off
firecrackers and paste large pictures of fierce-looking gods on doors and gates to frighten them off.
Before the New Year’s Eve, people make their homes attractive by decorating them with flowers and
plants, and hanging brightly-colored decorations. Then on the evening itself, all the family members gather at
home to enjoy a special dinner and see the New Year in together. Children are expected to stay awake after
midnight and the superstition is that if they go to bed early they will have a short life.
On New Year’s Day all members of the family take a bath and put on the new clothes. Everyone greets
each other with the words: “Gong Xi Fa Cai!”, which means “May prosperity be with you!”.
Children are given gifts of money called “Lucky Money” in red and gold envelopes. These are
sometimes put under their pillows the night before. After enjoying the festive foods, people visit their relatives
and friends to wish them a happy and prosperous year.
