Furniture design has been a part of the human experience since the beginning of history.
Evidence of furniture survives from as far back as the Neolithic period. (Source:

The later years of 20th & 21st century has seen a vast influence of availability of an array of
materials that are globally sourced in furniture design & trends. Hence the current times
sees a confluence and relevance of various styles at the same time unlike the preceding
centuries which stood for particular trends in styles, be it Victorian, Art Nouveau, Art deco,
Bauhaus or Modern.

Arguably Bauhaus & Art Deco styles helped in ushering of various materials other than the
good old wood. Gilded cabinets, wrought iron and metal inlays gave way to the glittering
simplicity of the polished or coated metal in furniture. In India,metal furniture for several
years has been a choice of people looking for long-lasting, space-saving and economical
options in furniture. However, this is slowly changing with focus of machine made and
machine coated metal elements reducing dependence upon manual fabrication. With
international furniture giants in India now, metal is gaining its much deserved attention
as a sustainable and aesthetical option for home & office.

Meshable is a furniture brand which uniquely brings metal wire mesh designs in furniture
which offer unique aesthetic and exemplary strength by its unique pattern geometry. Made
out of Galvanized wire weldmesh or Chainlink or hexagonal woven mesh, these can be
coated in various colours with help of coating technologies like powder coating, PVC
coating and thermoplastic coating.

Any meshable designs should have the following guiding principles:

Minimalism :
Beautiful yet not adorned. Minimalism in meshable simply means that every
spec of design should help in bringing a sense of harmony, balance,
aesthetic or function.

Modularity :
Can your meshable design be expanded with the future needs? Or Can it be
collapsed to fit in a small Urban apartment? Can it transform to resonate
with the new trends ? If the answer is yes to any one of the above questions,
it's a meshable design! The designs modularity should also help its owner to
easily assemble it & install it.

Sustainability :
The design will commit itself to eco-friendly materials which can be recycled
or re-used. The finishes, coating & materials should be selected for minimal
maintenance which lowers expenditure and environmental impact.

Meshable winning designs will be chosen by a panel of judges including architects &
industrial designers. The design will be judged keeping in mind innovation, uniqueness &
aesthetic appeal through the lens of meshable design principles & Meshable story.

Meshable Story
The story of the design should be communicated by narrating its use, installation
methodology and design components by means of text (max. 150 words) , orthographic
drawings, 3D visualization, and /or 3D model photographs.

Structural integrity of designed furniture product should be kept in mind

All winning entries will get a certificate and the following prizes

₹20,000/- ₹10,000/- ₹5,000/-

Upto 3 entries will be given special mention and will be awarded with certificates
mentioning the same.
Weldmesh
Welded wire mesh, Welded wire fabric or
weldmesh is an electric fusion welded
prefabricated joined grid consisting of series
of parallel longitudinal wires with accurate
spacing welded to cross wires at required
spacing.

While designing & manufacturing of

weldmesh we need to consider followings as
per aesthetics and functional requirement of
the weldmesh,

Wire dia,
Mesh size,
Coating,
Panel size.

We can vary Mesh size of weldmesh, followings are the

different mesh sizes we can select as per our design
requirements,

13mm X 75mm,
25mm X 25mm,
50mm X 50mm,
25mm X 50mm,
50mm X 100mm,

Wire dia is design with respect to load carrying capacity, it

can vary from 3mm to 5mm, you can consider 4mm wire
dia.

We can do coating on each panel or entire product based

on the design, two different colour coating can not be done
on single panel. We can select any RAL shed colour for
design. Max panel size of single panel can be manufactured
is 1.5m X 2.5m.

After manufacturing of panels following activities play an important role in product

development -

Shearing - Bigger panels can be cut into small pieces.

While cutting irregular shapes (other then square or
rectangle) one needs to weld extra wire at the edge as a
safety parameter, there should not be any loose end.

Bending - As per design requirement bending can be

done on weldemsh panel, there is not limit to the
bending degree, bending provide strength to weldmesh
panel,

Welding - Weldmesh panel can be manually welded to

other weldmesh panel or metal structural components.

Integration - Weldmesh panel can be easily integrated

with metal rods, wooden planks and engineered wood
with help of nuts and bolts or wooden beading
patti/edging.
Submission & Eligibility Criteria
All Architects/ Designers/ Students/ Artists are eligible for participation either individually
or in a group of maximum three individuals. The participation is absolutely free for all the
participants.

STEP 1 - Participants are required to register themselves by 20th July 2021 through this
google form .

STEP 2 - Note the registration ID received as an acknowledgement to your registration

STEP 3 - Prepare the submission as per the following

The design should be submitted online as a PDF file not exceeding 10 MB and all drawings and
text as specified should be formatted within one standard A2 paper size. the sheet should have
your unique registration ID on the right hand side top corner.

All design submissions should reach this email address competition@meshable.in by 30th July
2021 by 11:59 pm IST

Results will be announced by mid August 2021.

FAQ
Is a coaster a furniture?

A single coaster design or a series of coaster design cannot be categorized as a furniture piece
in itself. However if it comes with a coaster organizer along with table top spoon organizer
then the same may qualify for the purpose of this competition.

Can I design a decorative piece of furniture like a flower Vase?

No. This competition prefers to largely be in the domain of furniture, however if a decorative
Item like a photo frame is designed to display minimalism, modularity & sustainability in a
unique way, it will be considered. ?

Can I design more than 1 piece of furniture?

Yes, if the number of pieces come together to make the set. Eg.- a chair and table together.
However 2 unrelated pieces of furniture should be submitted as separate entries. Eg.- a table
lamp & a sofa.

Can it be outdoor furniture like a balcony trellis or a potted plant stand?

Yes
