Derivation for Range Resolution for Automotive Radar

Equation:
Delta_R = C / 2 * BW

Derivation:

Lets say R is the Range and T is the trip time (from Tx to Rx), then

R = (speed (C) * T ) / 2

If we want to find the range resolution Delta R, then it means that it takes delta trip time
resolution (dely time resolution)

Delta_R = (speed * delta_T) / 2 --------------- [1]

Now for FMCW waveform, say B is Bandwidth and T is Chirp Time, so slope of the Chirp or
Chirp Rate = B / T

In FMCW, we estimate the time delay by estimating the frequency shift between the Received
and Transmitted signals.

Because the Chirp Rate is R = B / T, the time resolution corresponding to the frequency
resolution of 1/T is

(1/T) / (B/T) = (1/B) = delta_T ----------------- [2]

Substitute value from equation [2] in eq [1]

Delta_R = speed / (2*B)

Hence, more value of B, reduces value of Delta_R, this means high range resolution and
so high capability of the Radar sensor to distinguish between two very near objects.
