Career case studies
Anzor Mantskava and Danilo Di Salvo
Co-founders of gvino UK
A Banker and an Aerospace Engineer
are perhaps not the most likely
candidates to set up a new business
in the wine industry but that is exactly
what Anzor and Danilo did after
completing their Full-time MBAs
back in 2016.
What prompted you to study an MBA?
Anzor: I graduated from a State University
in 2004 when the quality of education in my
country was poor. I have always wanted to
undertake some form of postgraduate study
as I have learned mainly from practice.
Danilo: I felt that I had achieved
all that I could in a hard-core engineering
environment and so I wanted to broaden
myself out. Doing an MBA was the
perfect choice. I wanted to learn about
the softer-side of business as well as
meet and learn from people in different
industries from around the world.
Did you start your MBA planning to
take the entrepreneurial route?
Anzor: It was definitely an option.
I had previously tried to set up
four businesses, all of which failed due
to lack of proper dedication and time due to
my day job in the corporate environment.
Danilo: Spending so much of my career
in research, I’ve always wanted to go off on
my own and explore life as an entrepreneur
but I had not come across the right
opportunity - nothing that I believed in.
I thought that meeting lots of new people
would help cross-pollinate ideas and perhaps
something could come out of that.

How did your idea for gvino
UK come about?
Anzor: Wine and vineyards are a large
part of the Georgian culture. Georgian
wines are fantastic but Danilo did not believe
me until he tried it for himself. We had an
assignment in which we had to come up
with an idea and write a business plan.
Danilo decided to write about setting up
a Georgian Wine Bar in London and he did
it so well, with such a detailed explanation
of my country and the wine culture that
the lecturer thought it was my assignment
– they are marked anonymously!
Danilo: From the first day of the MBA,
Anzor kept enthusing about Georgian wine.
I thought that he was clearly mad but out of
politeness I accepted an invitation to try his
wine. Good move! After a couple of bottles of
wine, we decided that we should launch a wine
business and then set up a wine bar in London,
and so gvino UK was born. After completing
our MBAs, I flew out to stay with Anzor and
his family and that’s when we got serious
and put our money where our mouths were.
How did the CareersPlus team at WBS
support you in realising your vision for
gvino UK?
Danilo: The LeadershipPlus module has
contributed a lot to how we run our business.
We follow the principles that we learned
during the module and ensure we always
have a purpose to what we are trying to do.
Through the MBA we got to know each other
professionally as well as personally,
and that helps us make the best decisions
for us, our customers and our suppliers.
We always fall back on our raison d’etre:
bringing the UK the Georgian Wine
Experience. Our CareersPlus coach is still on
hand to help us during our journey - having
access to someone who is such a formidable
and talented coach is priceless for us.
What plans do you have for the future?
Anzor: To open a Georgian Wine
Bar in London!
Danilo: We also want to grow the current
business and establish ourselves as the go-to
wine shop for the best Georgian wine. We
recently held the first online Georgian wine
tasting, which was a tremendous success.

Paul Fitzgerald
Senior Strategy Consultant at PwC Ireland
From Formula 1 Engineer to Strategy
Consultant, Paul embarked on his MBA
in 2018 with the ambition of moving
from an operational role to a strategic
role and that is exactly what he
has achieved.
What did you do before starting
your MBA?
I was an Aerodynamics Design
Engineer in Formula 1. My role was
focused on the design of the car and
planning of aerodynamic sessions.
What prompted you to study an MBA?
It was prompted by a number of things, I
wanted to move away from an engineering
role and push towards a role in consulting,
specifically strategy consulting. I was also
planning on moving countries and I felt an
MBA would give me the best chance at the
career move I was looking to achieve.
How have the CareersPlus
team supported you?
Through the one-to-one sessions, my careers
coach helped me to realise that I had a lot of
transferable skills from motorsport into a role
in strategy consulting; skills such as making
data driven decisions and being able to
describe highly complex systems in
a simplified and clear format, as well as being
able to work under extreme pressure and time

WBS is for the people that are open to
different views, voices and visions. That’s
why you will undertake a compulsory trip
to an overseas partner institution as part
of one of your required modules. While
many MBA courses offer optional study
tours, at WBS we see the international
element as an essential experience for
you and your personal development.
During the trip, which normally takes
place in your second term, you will take
part in practitioner debates, lectures and
workshops where you will explore further
the themes of the required module within
the context of the trip’s geographic location.

to candidates admitted onto the Warwick
Full-time MBA. Our scholarship offering has
been designed to promote excellence and
