3.0 Decide on the hot water system you intend to use for the system
Locate the positions of the hot water cylinders
Identify how to supply the cold water to the hot water cylinders
Size the hot water cylinders (Use the plumbers guide for this)
4.0 Pipework
Draw the general layout of the pipes from the water tank to the point of use
Size the pipes, use loading units or any other method (Refer to the plumbers guide
for this). Sizing is usually done from the point of use, backwards to the water tank. It is
important to have a sketch for this.
5.0 Pump
Sketch the general layout of the pipeline from the house to the tanks
Calculate the total pump flow rate based on the elevated storage capacity and the
projected pumping time
Calculate the total friction losses in the pipeline. This has three components:
The friction head, where you have to get the equivalent length, and the losses
per metre.
The static head which is fixed by the height of the elevated tank
The pressure head which is determined by the required pressure at the point of
use. The tank one may need just 1 or 2m head.
Select the pump based on the flow rate and the total head from a pump catalogue
