DOMESTIC WATER DESIGN

IPC (CHAPTER 6)

PIPE SIZING BASED ON FIXTURE UNIT CALCULATION:

A. We get the individual WSFUs of all the fixtures from table E103.3(3)

Notes:
1. For Hose Bibb, 2.5 wsfu is for the farthest hose bibb in the
segment whereas for other hose bibbs we use 1 wsfu.
2. In IPC, for FLUSH TANK & FLUSH VALVE, we have different
demand table. Hence whenever there is a flush valve fixture in a
system(Generally in public toilets) we size the this segment based
on FLUSH VALVE.
B. For trunk line sizing we need to find total fixture unit, then convert
this TFU to GPM, using table E103.3(3).
Then based on maximum velocity,GPM & material, we can find the
size of pipe using-
1. Hunter curve
2. Any pipe sizing application.( Ex. McQuay Pipe Sizer 6.2)

C. Pipe sizing using McQuay 6.2

But first we need to get The GPM value to put in pipe sizer.
D. Calculation of Total GPM from Total FU
UPC (CHAPTER 6)

PIPE SIZING BASED ON FIXTURE UNIT CALCULATION:

A. We get the individual WSFUs of all the fixtures from table 610.3

Notes:
1. For Hose Bibb, 2.5 wsfu is for the farthest hose bibb in the
segment whereas for other hose bibbs we use 1 wsfu.
2. For flush valve fixtures, we have different WSFU table 610.10 for
WC & URINAL.
3. For sizing based on diversity, we need to follow table C 303.1(1)
listed below.
B. WSFU for flush valve fixtures
C. WSFU for bath groups where diversity is used

D. Calculation of Total GPM from Total FU

1. Hunter Curve
2. This chart is generated from the graphs above, so we can easily
follow this chart(Not provided in upc)
MDD
CREATION OF DOMESTIC RISERS, USV:
1. First we need to create the building layout which will help us to
create USV and Risers for both domestic and sanitary.

2. Then we can create the Domestic risers in excel & cad.

Site plan:
We mark the civil tap location of building drain leaving the building.
We provide SIZE, & Total FU of CW .

Modeling & Annotation:

A. UNIT MODELING, SIZING & ANNOTATION:

i) For domestic we need to create the domestic unit plans which

may or may not include water heaters based on hot water source.

ii) If the source of hot water is water heater, then we need to place
the water heaters in AHU Room on the floor. And the CW riser for
the unit will be On the back wall RHS of the heater.

iii) If the source of hot water is WATER HEATER BANK then the
location of domestic water will be on the Laundry room and RHS of
the back wall.

iv) The pipes cannot run over mechanical/AHU Room as there will
be duct coming from AHU.

v) As we complete the unit routing & modeling, we can size based

on required code.

vi) Then we do the sizing & annotation.

vii) The keynotes center shall be at 1’-6” from the exterior wall.

viii) In UPC, the pipe size should become 3/4” when 3 fixtures are
combined.

B. BUILDING MODELING, SIZING & ANNOTATION:

i) We first identify the domestic pump/ Riser room from where the
CW main will come.

ii) Then we will model the main header at N-1 where N is total no
of floors having residential units. We don’t count the roof here.

iii) Then we place and connect the CW riser which location we can
get from unit plan.

iv) If the corridors are unconditioned, then we insulate the pipe.

v) Then we place the Hose Bibbs at each 100’ outside of the

building and on roof if required( Ask from client)

vi) Now as the model is complete, we place the keynotes.

vii) Dimension for placing keynotes: 2’ from the exterior of building

in that portion.

viii) Then we size the model using sizing table of IPC/UPC.

ix) Then we place text for each pipe of the header which includes
Pipe size, Pipe service & FU.

x) Then we have to calculate PSI.

xi) Finally we annotate the Pump/Riser Room.
