HVAC Design review

1. Design review steps


Based on the rules in administration to get correct and good neat design, it has to
study the design in following steps & submissions.

2. Concept submission
Based on load calculation, and process demand, different alternative ideas could
be generated for treatment lead to propose two or three alternative systems,
and then a comparison between proposals to select the best solution, taking into
consideration the location circumstances.
The best suitable system is proposed based on the location circumstances.

3. Schematic submission
Extracting from the concept submission, schematic step to study the different
configurations can be used to implement of the concept, aim to have simple,
lower power consumption, lower installation cost good and balanced operation
for the system.
The schematic submission is already done.

4. Progress submissions
Could be three or four submissions needed, to reach the final acceptance, and
denote the submission (issued for construction).
In our case, we did not pass the concept submission, same also for schematic
submission, only what received an un marked copy of the design dated 30-4 -
2017 consisted of four sheets, it was discussed in a meeting held at17 -5- 2017,
without having any of, load calculations or equipment performance parameters,
based on that, we issued a general comments regarding the documents received.

We received dated 22-5-2017 a submission marked (issued for construction)
containing 19 sheet, no implement for any of our comment raised in previous
meeting, no load calculation no performance parameters for equipment are given
We are not able to have comprehensive look for the project, to make review as
per rules, and investigate the submitted work within compliance with local
circumstances and codes since that the base of design (load calculation) is not
submitted yet.
Based on above we regret to consider the last submission is not accepted and not
valid for construction until receive all the information that make review is logic,
and can be executed in good way.
The heat load calculation with design based report is already submitted. Also for critical
areas such as printing, solvent less, solvent base etc. the required CFM is mentioned on
drawings. Also inside temperature to maintain is also mentioned on drawings.

5. Drawings
5.1 Ground floor
One sheet is general & three in larger scale
There are many AC units, range from400 cfm, to5000 cfm, these units are hanged
from ceiling, however that the metal frame are awarded to the contractor, some
of these unit having larger weight more than to be accepted from the contractor,
that will lead to issue variation, we need a confirmation that weighs of all units
are located in design are coordinated with issued design of steel work that in
contractor hand, and no variation what so ever issued from his side regarding
that item
The AC units up to 6000 CFM can be easily installed ceiling suspended.
Typical details needed for:-
a. Duct penetration from roof to indoor and how rain sealing will attain.
Will be provided by HVAC contractor in shop drawings.
b. How to support one of those heavy units in the steel structure.
Details will be provided by HVAC contractor in shop drawings.

c. Fan coil unit with air tight pattern installation details.
Details will be provided by HVAC contractor in shop drawings
d. Fan coil drainage details, slope, traps, minimum drain pipe level.
Details will be provided by HVAC contractor in shop drawings
e. Firefighting zoning, structure expansion joints locations.
Not in our scope.

f. Behavior of side discharge fans against wind direction change how can
isolate intakes and discharge outlets from being affected by wind direction
back pressure.
Wind direction will not effect on HVAC system.
g. Precautions against sand storm.
The sand filter with pre filter is provided in all AHUs. Also sand trap & filter is
provided in all louvers.
h. Air balance for the ground floor as one space.
The air balancing is done by providing volume control damper in main & branch duct.
In addition to this the each supply air diffuser/grill is with damper. The return air duct
is also provided with damper.
i. Do we have any measure for sound pressure level inside the floor?
In the air-condition area the sound level should be less than 40db.

5.2 Mezzanine floor


Same comments as per ground floor

5.3 Roof level


a. AHU are presented in dimensions not reflect its actual size in nature – for
example the unit 10000 cfm actual dimension is 1.8 meter by 3.6 meter
length, it is presented 1.5 x1.5 meter, that will create bad configuration in
execution.
The size provided is the general size of AHU. The actual size will be
provided by manufacturer. The variation in size may occur because of
change in scale in AutoCAD done.
b. Spaces for maintenance and routing around AHU are not taken into
consideration, as recommended for any reference supplier.

The standard spaces for maintenance is shown in drawings.
b. the power allocated for each electrical isolator need to be revised according
to the actual motor characteristics of the unit, need to be expressed in KVA
based on 0.8 power factor.
Not in our scope. Also motor rating is denoted in KW/HP.
d. Details for chiller and pump repeated in the second sheet which is not
relevant.
Need to clarify
e. no weights are indicated for each installed equipment, that mean it is not
coordinated with issued structure (under execution now), that give
contractor rights to refuse any of installations and drag us to variation
orders during of executions.
The actual weight will be provided by manufacturer.
f. AHU OF 20000 cfm for ink store, in nature has dimensions 1.8 x 4.3 meters,
on drawings 2.2 x 2.2 meters, weight is not indicated, not coordinated with
structure.
The size provided is the general size of AHU. The actual size will be
provided by manufacturer. The variation in size may occur because of
change in scale in AutoCAD done.
g. consider the AHU composed from, fan section+ coil section+ flat and bag filter
section+ inlet box, then select dimensions in according

h. it is not clear how 20000 cfm admitted to the inc store and go out, how to
make air balance for this store, what is the precautions for explosion proof
been taken.
The heat load is submitted for the selection of 20000 CFM AHU. The air balancing is
done by providing volume control damper in main & branch duct. In addition to this
the each supply air diffuser/grill is with damper. The return air duct is also provided
with damper. Also fire damper is provided.

i. How to control temperature inside (summer &winter) – where thermostat


will be located, dos it manual change over or automatic?

Thermostat will be located at return air duct & it will be
automatic.
j. the concept of feed CH.W by underground piping is not clean, it will leave
dirt accumulated within underground loop without drainage ,it will lead
serious blockage with time, could be last for 3 years before create trouble
after, design should be stable in operation for 20 years.
The chemical dosing unit is installed for cleaning of chilled water pipes. Also
soft water is used for chilled water system.
k. the secondary pump work all the time in the higher head to deliver water to
the ink store area, which is not the case for other units in the factory,
throttling on the these units means an extra work by pumps are consumed
without benefits, its bad concept energy wise, either to use separate system
for store as proposed before, or use booster pumps for deliver the extra
head required on that branch.
The secondary pump is provided with variable frequency drive which will
work on variable load.
l. chillers operation will continue for 24 hours to feed ink store, the system may
need a stand by unit with this condition of operation.
The AHUs with same capacity can be installed to be
used as stand by. Or package unit can be used as
stand by.
m. Show the expansion tank location at pump room, and its size in liters, what
is pressure adjust for the CH.W system.
Pre loading pressure 2 bar & max operating pressure 10 bar.
n. show the water treatment location at pumping room, size of feeder and
configuration.
Details will be provided by HVAC contractor.
o. Evacuation of water during system flushing is not indicated consequently it is
coordinated in drainage.

p. How to drain the water trapped in underground piping during flushing of the
system or in maintenance procedure after.
The water trapped in underground piping is need to be force flushed.

5.4 Operation sequence


Not issued in the sent documents, it has to include
a. Operation In normal cases- sequence for start and stop.
b. Start In case of power failure
c. operation In case of fire
HVAC system will work on DG Set in case of fire events and in case of power failure.

5.5 Smoke evacuation


Not known yet, however design will not be accepted without clear application for
system reference to ASHRAE or NFPA.
Smoke extractor fan can be proposed for smoke extraction system which is to
be link with fire alarm system. Its been asked earlier also but yet not confirmed
from client end. The smoke exhaust system can be prepared once the fire
fighting zone finalized.

5.6 Winter conditions


Temperature in outdoor drop to 12 C at day time and will reach to 5C at night in
winters, what is the reflection of that temperature on the inside temperatures,
the indicated temperatures for processing could need to be kept at the
determined level.
No indication for humidity control inside, dos it has negligible effect on
process.
We have provided hot water generator for winter heating in preliminary drawings. But it is asked
to remove from client end.

6. BOQ
More details needed since that intention is to award the contract as
premeasured contract.

7. Conclusion
We cannot accept what included in the last submission as issued for construction
we have to receive load calculation and main equipment parameters as output
from schematic submission was not implemented to make full review on

documents, and save our client interest in have neat feasible in operation,
coordinated , variation free design
