Cinema act:

The Kerala Cinema regulations act 1988, is a regulation of Kerala Government, enacted by the
state legislature to ensure electrical, fire and mob safety for the people gathering at Cinema
theatres. Since the size and capacity of the cinema theatres vary, different provisions apply for
different sized theatres, but all aim the safety of personnel and property. The civil provisions
are looked after by the PWD and electrical and fire provisions are looked after by the Electrical
Inspectorate. The following are the relevant electrical rules.

1. All the switchboards shall be metallic.

2. All provisions of IE act, IE regulations and relevant codes of practice shall be met.
3. All wiring in the cabin shall be enclosed in metallic conduits or with armoured cables.
4. All equipments in the cabin shall be enclosed by metallic covering.
5. All wiring in the auditorium and elsewhere shall be as per the provisions of IS 732.
6. There shall be minimum 3 circuits (left, right and centre) in the auditorium { Obviously,
this rule is directed at small theatres, since in big cosmopolitan theatres, there is bound
to be many circuits}
7. All outdoor lighting shall be wired with weatherproof wire.
8. There shall be a dimmer for the centre light.
9. Minimum number of fire buckets filled with sand and water, and fire extinguishers shall
be kept in cabin and auditorium.

Now for large theatres the following additional provisions also are needed.

10. All AC systems shall be of the centrally air conditioned type, and the energy
consumption to these systems shall be separately metered.
11. Standby generators shall be of sufficient capacity to meet the air conditioning plant too
apart from other essential loads.
12. All energy generated by the generator shall also be metered, by meters approved by
authorized authorities.
13. Apart from the fire extinguishers, fire buckets etc., necessary water sorage and water
hydrant system to put out fire shall also be kept.

Example: Draw the plan of the projection room and the auditorium of a temporary theatre.

Assume 3 classes, first class, second class and floor class, with dimensions as shown in the plan.

Design of HOSPITAL lighting.

Steps:

1. Points required are marked in the plan; adding the wattage of the points,
Total light & fan load of cabin, auditorium and external area= 30*60 watts=1.8 kW

Total power load (power plugs 4 nos, cabin projector, water pump)= 5 kW

Grand total = 6.8 kW, add 10 % future growth making approx 7.5 kW

Since this is above 5 kW, three phase supply is needed.

Incoming weatherproof service wire takes 3 phase supply to the cabin.

2. Position of the supplier’s and consumer’s meter boards are fixed as shown, considering
nearness to the road and front gate. On the supplier board, electric supply is received
through 4 core, weatherproof type 10 mm. sq. aluminium wire by the energy meter and
from there goes to 16 A cut outs in the phases and 16 A neutral link in the neutral.
Consumer’s board is inside in the cabin with a 16 A ICTP incomer control.
3. Decided to run wiring conduits at 4 mtrs, just above the doors; also decided to fix light
points on side walls at convenient locations at this height to get more coverage, and to
fix ceiling roses for fans on ceilings. The MSB and individual flush type control switches
are put on boxes at a height of 1.5 mtrs.
4. Use 3 circuits for the auditorium, one for center light with dimmer, one for cabin and
two for left and right side external lights (Total 7 circuits)
5. All 3 pin plugs and non current carrying metal parts should be earthed using the 14 SWG
bare copper earth wires in the conduit runs. So length of 14 SWG bare copper earth
wires = !0% in excess of the total conduit length.
6. Get the total lengths of conduits, all 30 mm dia.
7. Get the total lengths of wires of different sizes.(In this case, 14/0.3 mm, PVC insulated,
unsheathed, 650 volts grade stranded copper wires, for lights and fans, 28/0.3 mm for
power plugs and water pump, 1 phase 0.75 HP
8. Show two standard earth pipes, 38 mm dia GI made, 2.75 mtrs deep with check nuts
bolts and nuts for tight connections at top, both interconnected, near the MSB
9. Prepare the complete single line wiring diagram.
10. Also draw an earthing plan with a short earth bus, about 1 meter, 25*3 mm, at the MSB
connecting to the earth pipes two in number which are interconnected with the same
size copper strip.

The single line electric wiring diagram and plan showing positions of 3 classes in auditorium,
cabin and earthing is shown.
