CAT: Fluid Mechanics II: 332- June 2021

This is a 48 hour CAT : Time 1pm (31/05/2021) – 1pm (02/06/2021)

Instructions to Students:

The time allowed to complete this examination paper is 48 hrs

Answer ALL questions

All calculations must be clearly presented, the final answer alone is not
sufficient to score full marks.

You will not be able to upload your work on the eclass platform
after the given deadline
Question Q1 (Total 30 Marks)

Answer parts (a) & (b).

Parts (a) is worth 15 marks & (b) is worth 15 marks.
Please note you must clearly present all calculations in full and reference all
tables/information used. For example, “Range pipe sizes have been determined based
on appropriate BS EN: standards.

Q1(a)
The ordinary hazard sprinkler system shown in Figure 1 below is to be installed in a
compartment. The sprinkler heads are in a standard grid formation with the spacing
shown.

(i) Using the pre-calculated method and the design tables:

 Determine the correct location of the design point for the array.
 Size all the range pipes.
 Size the distribution pipes up to the design point.

(ii) Determine the distribution pipe sizes between the design point and the
control valve using hydraulic calculations based on a maximum pressure
loss of 500 mbar at a flow rate of 1000 l·min-1.

(iii)Re-sketch the system noting the design point and all pipe sizes.

Use the old BS: 5306-2 to help calculate the pressure losses within the pipes and the
equivalent length of each turn can be assumed to be 3.2 m.

Q1(b)
Figure 2 below shows the most remote range of an ordinary hazard sprinkler system.

Each sprinkler covers an area of 14m2 and you can assume that the sprinkler spacing
and coverage meets with standard design guidance for an OH system.

Using the information provided (including the appended tables which have been
extracted from the relevant BS EN standards) perform the necessary hydraulic design
calculations clearly showing all steps taken to determine the flow and associated
pressure for each sprinkler head.

Please note you should:

 Check the minimum design density.
 Determine the pressure required and associated flow for each sprinkler head.

General system information:

 All pipes shown run horizontally
 The sprinkler system will comprise pipes of mild steel with screw-fit joints. Their
diameters are provided in Figure 2.
 The minimum sprinkler discharge pressure for an OH system is 0.35 bar.
 The area covered by each sprinkler is 14m2.

Where information is taken from the tables provided then the correct tables must be
referenced.
