Quarter 1, Week 5
Self - Learning Activity
II. Objective
At the end of the week, the learners will be able to describe techniques in
separating mixtures such as evaporation and filtration. S6MT-Id-f-2
Science Ideas:
Filtration is a process that makes use of a filtering medium such as filter paper,
cloth, sieve, or strainer. It does not allow to dissolved particles to pass through the hole
of the filtering medium. A filter works like a mesh screen with very tiny openings or pores.
This technique can be used in sand and gravel mixtures--- the sand will pass through the
sieve and the gravel is left behind. Coconut milk can be separated from residue of grated
coconut using a strainer. Even the water that you are drinking makes use of filtration. To
make water portable and ready to drink, water purifier filters are used, separating the dirt
and other particles.
2
If a substance does not dissolve in a solvent, we say that it is insoluble. For example,
sand does not dissolve in water – it is insoluble.
Filtration is a method for separating an insoluble solid from a liquid. When a mixture
of sand and water is filtered:
the sand stays behind in the filter paper (it becomes the residue)
the water passes through the filter paper (it becomes the filtrate
the sand stays behind in the filter paper (it becomes the residue)
the water passes through the filter paper (it becomes the filtrate)
The liquid particles are small enough to pass through the filter paper as a filtrate. The solid
particles are too large to pass through the filter paper and stay behind as a residue.
