SYNOPSIS

THERMAL BARRIER COATINGS FOR GAS TURBINE BLADES

Objective:

 Analysis and prove the study of thermal barrier coating to improve the efficiency,
power and durability of gas turbines by improving the properties of creep
strength, corrosion resistance, fatigue strength and thermal resistivity, etc.
 Comparing the properties of Thermal barrier coated turbine blades with non-
coated turbine blade materials.

Salient Features

 TBC provide thermal insulation to protect the underlying super alloy engine parts,
have strain compliance to minimize thermal-expansion-mismatch stresses with the
super alloy parts on heating and cooling, and must also reflect much of the radiant
heat from the hot gas, preventing it from reaching the metal alloy.
 TBC maintain thermal protection for prolonged service times and thermal cycles
without failure.
 Application in aircraft engines.
 Application in gas turbines.

Detailed methodology:
 Analyzing the environmental failure mode of turbine blades by existing and past
history and reference and analyzing its root cause and related technical data
 Analysis and study of coating technique to be employed on TBC
 Selection of TBC method for application of barrier coating on turbine blade
 Selection of thermal barrier coating material.
 Appling the thermal barrier coating on blades
 Testing the TBC coated turbine blades for mechanical and chemical properties
 Comparing the efficiency of non-coated gas turbine with TBC coated gas turbine.

Expected Contribution from the Study

Gas-Turbine engines with Thermal Barrier coated blades widely can be used in transportation,
energy, and defense sectors with improved efficiencies and power based on the project study.
