INTRODUCTION: The chromosome number for a species is constant, so at some time prior to sexual
reproduction, the chromosome number must be reduced or the species chromosome number would
double with each generation. Meiosis accomplishes this reduction by first pairing, and then separating,
homologous pairs of chromosomes. Meiotic events also form the basis of variation seen in the genetic
traits of living organisms.

OBJECTIVES: At the end of this activity, students will be able to:


1. Draw and describe the stages of meiosis.
2. Compare and contrast the process of mitosis with meiosis.

PROCEDURE:
1. Classify the stage of meiosis of each cell in the diagram. Describe the major events that take place in
