Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)

Liquefied Petroleum Gas Health Hazards

❑ Liquefied Petroleum Gas can enter into the body by inhalation or

through Eye or skin.

❑ Overexposure of Liquefied Petroleum Gas may cause

lightheadedness and drowsiness.

❑ It may also cause unconsciousness and death if LPG is inhaled at

greater extent.

❑ In liquid form it may cause skin irritation and frostbite. Similarly in

Gaseous form LPG may cause central nervous system depressant.
Personal Protective Equipment

❑ It is need to use impervious clothing, face shield (Minimum eight

inch) and other appropriate clothes use to prevent the skin from
becoming frozen from liquid LPG. It is also for contact with vessel
containing Liquid LPG.

❑ If cloth become wet with liquid LPG, it will be need to remove

immediately until LPG has been evaporated.

❑ Employees should be provided with splash Goggles where liquid

LPG may be in contact with the eyes.
Emergency First Aid Procedures

❑ If liquid LPG contact with eyes then in that case flush the eyes with
large amount of water lifting lower and upper lids occasionally. Hot
water should not be used in this case. Contact lens must not be
worn when working with liquid LPG.

❑ If liquid LPG gets in contact with the skin then it will be need to
immediately flush the skin with water.

❑ In case if person breath large amount of LPG then immediately take

that person to fresh air. If breathing stops then perform artificial
respiration for him. It will also be necessary to keep that person
warm.
Leak and Disposal Procedure

❑ In case if LPG leaks then remove all ignition sources.

❑ Provide proper ventilation for leakage area.

❑ If source of leakage is a cylinder then remove the leaked cylinder to

open air.

❑ Person with out proper clothing and equipment should not be

allowed to exposed area.
Important Information

❑ Liquefied Petroleum Gas produces twice of energy then natural

Gas. So LPG is cost effective.

❑ LPG Vehicles have less maintenance cost.

❑ Liquefied Petroleum Gas requires less space then CNG for storage.

❑ Once the pipeline leaks or the valve is not tightly fastened, LPG will
spread into the room. When its content reaches the explosion limit
(1.7%-10%), LPG will explode if it meets any sparks or electric
sparks
Physical and Chemical Properties of LPG

❑ Molecular Weight of LPG varies from 42 to 58 depending upon

amount of ingredient.

❑ Vapor density of LPG is 1.6 to 2 (Air=1).

❑ Toxic gases such as Carbon Monoxide may be produce in case of

fire related to LPG.
Commissioning and Decommission of LPG

❑ Before filling of LPG the vessel should be tested. It should be free

from leaks.

❑ Vessel and its equipment need to be purged. Air in the vessel can
be removed by using inert gas.

❑ During leak testing and purging it is need to take care that vessel is
not subject to pressure or temperature condition outside its design
criteria.

❑ Before decommissioning it is need to be check that there is no vapor

pressure in the line.

❑ The drain connection need to be less then 50 mm in diameter and

fitted with two shut-off valves in series before emptying the vessel..
