Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a theory that people are motivated to fulfill basic needs like physiological and safety needs before pursuing higher level growth needs. The theory proposes that educational development can be disrupted if students' lower level needs are not met, preventing them from feeling loved, esteemed, and capable of self-actualization. Meeting needs occurs on a "more or less" continuum rather than absolutely, and impacts behavior, personality and academic performance.

Hierarchy of Needs Theory • Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a motivational theory in psychology consisting of five levels of human “need” • Maslow believed that people are motivated to achieve certain needs in life, but that some needs take priority over others • Individuals must satisfy lower levels before proceeding onto meeting higher levels of growth needs, but satisfaction of a need is not an “all-or-none” • Instead a “more or less” satisfaction of a need will do, based on external circumstances or individual differences • Educational and learning development are greatly impacted by this theory in students • Educational development is often disrupted by a failure to meet their lower level needs affecting their personal growth Level 1 Physiological Needs
• Before a student's cognitive needs can be met, they must
first fulfill their basic physiological needs • A tired and hungry student will find it difficult to focus on learning • Students require sleep, food, water, and clean air to focus on their studies • Students lacking these needs may lose focus, act out, doze off, or fall behind academically • These needs affect behavior, personality, and performance Level 2 Safety Needs • Students need to feel emotionally and physically safe and accepted within the classroom to advance and reach their full potential • In order to remain interactive in classroom assignments a safe classroom environment must be provided • Distractions may occur in a distracting environment preventing students from learning • Worries about safety can hinder students growth to continue to level 3 and so on Level 3 Love & Belonging Needs • Students must be shown that they are valued and respected in the classroom • Teachers should create a supportive environment for all students to feel welcomed • Students require to form healthy friendships, family bonds, and intimate relationships • Fulfilling this need forms a sense of feeling whole, complete, and allow to move forward to level 4 • Students need to feel they belong somewhere or to someone special (feel that they are special) Level 4 Esteem Needs • Students with a low self-esteem will not exceed academically at an optimum rate until their self-esteem is strengthened • Achievements are not met nor accomplished with a low self- esteem • Self-esteem can be a major factor to what holds students back from progressing and achieving goals • Students self-esteem has a major impact on education, learning, and their academics status • Self-esteem can be a difficult need to satisfy or fulfill depending on age group of students Level 5 Self- Actualization • Self-actualization develops from students who are stronger, healthier, and who take their lives into their hands to a greater extent • Increased personal responsibility for one’s personal life, students would begin to actively change the society in which they lived • Once all growth needs have been satisfied, students may be able to reach the highest level of Maslow’s theory • This need is the hardest to achieve, reflection back on, and recognize in oneself • This need consists of personal growth and enlightenment for the body and soul Hierarchy of Needs Summary
• Human beings are motivated by a hierarchy of needs
• The hierarchy of need has made a major contribution to teaching, students, and classroom management in schools • Needs are organized in a hierarchy in which basic needs must be more or less met (rather than all or none) prior to meeting higher needs
